Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Watson.
Hi Amanda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
On a whim, I took a photography class in high school thinking it would be an easy A and I’d go on about my way. Very quickly I fell in love with the darkroom process, creating an image from start to finish with my hands and sparking a lifelong passion for photography. A few years later, I was planning my own wedding and inspiration was sparse. Wedding blogs were not the norm and I found myself buying every wedding magazine I could get my hands on. It was 2007, Style Me Pretty has just been launched and I just knew I had to be a part of the wedding industry. As the saying goes “do what you know”, I knew photography and launched Amanda Watson Photography the same year. Over the last 15 years, I’ve found myself traveling across the country to document couples’ most special day in an artistic yet true to life manner. From an intimate Colorado ceremony with John Denver’s “Rocky Mountain” as the backdrop to the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel, I love weddings in all forms and locales.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course not! Running your own business is hard enough work as it is – recessions, election years and of course with the most recent pandemic the wedding industry as seen many struggles. Luckily, I’ve been able to adapt through the harder times in order in prosper in the times of plenty.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a fine art photographer specializing in weddings. I like to keep it to weddings as they are so multi-faceted. I have to be creative with portraits, details, architecture, landscape, candids and more so it really pushes me to always find a new perspective while staying true to one’s wedding day. I’m known for my longevity as well as expertise – so many photographers get burned out after a few years but I still find joy in my work and the couples that trust me to capture their day. I’m most proud of my publications; over the years I’ve been featured in Style Me Pretty, Martha Stewart Weddings, BRIDES, The Knot and more – it’s wonderful to see your work in print. What sets me apart is my keen eye for detail and understanding of light – I notice even the smallest hair out of place or crooked place setting, and correct it to ensure the clients look & feel their best and all the details they’ve poured their time into are remembered in a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing manner.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’m not much of a believer in luck – I’m a bootstrapper and have been since I was a child. I’ve always believed in working harder and smarter.
