Check Out Ashley Maes’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Maes.

Hi Ashley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey to becoming a hairstylist started when I was very young, 14 years old. Doing homecoming, prom hair for friends and making my own movie money by braiding the neighbor’s kid’s hair. I was blessed with a younger sister to practice on every time we were together.

I believe truly I didn’t choose hair but that it chose me. Every time I’d try a new technique weather color or cutting it would always come together. Finding the shape, creating, and bringing joy to someone with my art is by far the most amazing experience.

Seven years ago I started my career as an assistant for The Parlour Boulder. For 2 years I worked under some of the most influential, inspiring, creative educators in Colorado. Wella master colorists, American Crew men’s masters, Curly hair geniuses. I never missed a class, I never missed a day, and the amount of free education truly was such a gift. Gene built me into the businesswoman I am today, and I will forever be so grateful.

Now today, my best friend and love of my life David Greever and I are the proud owners of my very own salon at IMAGE STUDIOS, MAZE Hair Salon in beautiful Lafayette CO. We decided that after years of hard work and dedication I needed my own space to teach and spend quality time with my clients.

My clients and I spend sometimes hours together making their hair dreams reality, and in that time build friendship and trust. I can happily say every one of my clients is a great friend!

I specialize in thick hair after traveling to San Diego, CA studying under UNITE master stylists to better under thick hair, movement and shape. For men and women.

I also specialize in color corrections, meaning removing box colors, or fixing unwanted colors, creative colors, and blonding of all kinds.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Never a smooth road, after graduating from my assistant program at The Parlour, I went through a divorce. Together ten years.

Moved back in with my Mother, Step-Father and two brothers who took great care of me during a time of depression.
I was 26 years old.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
David Greever my partner and best friend is co-owner of Maze Hair Salon. Taking care of the behind-the-scenes. My other half.

Craig Niessink my mentor all these years from my start at The Parlour Boulder. Still close friends and now my hairdresser! I call him my salon Dad.

My Mom and siblings, I’m the oldest of five, and their love and support mean the absolute world to me and give me the confidence to be vulnerable enough to push the boundaries of my creativity in my work.
