Check Out Britt Devens’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Britt Devens.

Hi Britt, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I found an old Gibson in the garage that belonged to my dad at around age 15. So I started playing it with some buddies who were learning guitar tabs. After high school, I went off to college to play faspitch softball and ended up breaking my leg and when I realized I couldn’t play to the caliber that I was used to, I decided it was time for me to move on. When I moved home I was struggling more and more with anxiety and panic attacks that were stemmed from early insecurities about my sexuality (being a lesbian) and drinking helped me cope with those feelings. I started playing music while I figured out what I wanted to do with my life and started a band in Fort Collins, CO but the alcohol and unhealthy relationships did eventually take over. At age 24 I decided to quit drinking and go back to school and moved away to coach faspitch softball in Phoenix and continue playing music. I found my way back to Colorado around age 29 and when I turned 30 I decided I wanted more from my life and started to ween off of the benzodiazapine medication that I was prescribed for anxiety and had been taking for panic attacks for the last decade.

After a year of slowly weaning off of the benzos, I started to really think about what I wanted to do with my life. I switched careers, took my health and self-care routine more seriously than ever and then when covid hit, I started writing music again and thought about re-emerging into the Colorado music scene. In 2021, I recorded my first EP, I started performing live again and started a band in 2021. I have been trying to learn how to balance a full-time job, a five-piece band, my solo career, recording my first full-length album with a band, my sobriety, relationships and a healthy sleep/exercise/eating schedule and it definitely is challenging. If I could tell anyone who is struggling with addiction or anxiety/mental health issues is that you really can only take it one day at a time. For me, if I start to think ahead it gets very overwhelming so I try my best to stay present and grounded. I do a ton of breathing exercises, spend lots of time outside, play music and partake in physically exerting activities like Crossfit! 🙂

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a sober musician who struggles with anxiety… I promote a lot of self-care messages. My slogan is “take care of you” and understand everyone’s journey is different and some things work for others and some don’t. I have a ton of great days but have bad days too so I remember the importance of IMPERMANENCE. I try to take it one day at a time. I sing a lot about heartbreak and recovery and most of my songs are just stories from my life that I need to get out of my brain. My hope is to bring a positive tone, and message and create emotion to the listener when I play music.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
To trust the process and that all I need is within me.
