Check Out Dason Smith’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dason Smith.

Hi Dason, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I was in a management role at Barnes and Noble for more than a decade all the while trying to work my side hustles in between family life and the regular routines that gnaw on one’s time. One day I met a Korean War veteran named LA Green who came into the store trying to figure out how he could get his designed poster out there in the public eye. He showed off the US History Poster with glee and classic salesmanship and I thought to myself “[Lyle] Green is hustling with more energy than me and I love his poster design. Why not figure out a way to help each other out?”

We started exchanging texts and calls. Over the next several months I found out he had some complications from trying to run a  business operation in the past decade. That is also when Viggo Madsen and I crossed paths as we tried to figure out a way to get the printer updated and out there during the pandemic. We formed a partnership to take this design to the next level. The posters had a great sales track record but there wasn’t a lot of traction growth-wise because some of the scaling approaches had been a little outdated.

Despite this, I saw something brewing and with everything that I had wanted to do with my other business ventures, I felt this was a great cog. I thought it might even be the missing handle to help start priming the pump. I had helped run a local city publication, the Street Magazine, for several years, at the turn of the new century, even when the Olympics came to Salt Lake City. Publishing and writing were in my DNA and I was anxious to sub back off the bench. You don’t always have to have your idea or product from the ground up!

Why not merge a great teaching tool about US History with that my lifetime passion for patriotism and American exceptionalism? We are quite excited to be taking the message of our new umbrella brand CivCon Publishing to market. Civics, the Constitution, and Economics. We feel that a sound understanding of where we came from as a nation and the original Founding Father’s intent, when they formed that sacred document, is pivotal to where we are going.

Overall, it has been smooth and just takes daily execution in baby steps. We printed a new batch which we call the US Historical Poster 2021 and have it available on two different paper stocks. Putting the operational pieces together is fun for me. We created a specific shipping sleeve and decided on a sturdier print stock, and new color print quality.

The most significant issue coming up, since the poster has been around for a few presidential terms, is running out of space if a new president is elected on our current design. That is a great problem to have in that it allows us to reevaluate the current design and make it better, perhaps including new information. We look forward to coming out with version 2.0 by the next presidential term.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Green deserves all of the credit for the current design and structure of the poster as it was initially developed over nine months. We have new designs related to American History currently in the works with our team of graphic designers so it is a little early in the game to reveal the new ideas but we’ll be giving some teasers on our social media channels.

I’ve written several editorial pieces from my days at Street Magazine. Those will be published on my platform site soon, In my ideal world, my main focus when it comes to writing is poetry. My senior thesis, so to speak, was finishing my first book of poetry. It’s a collection that features key experiences of life leading up to that point and my ‘world-view’, or Weltanschauung.

Viggo has varied experience in building successful businesses and much of this can be seen at www.getviggo.com.  He is also developing two new books that will feature lessons learned from his business successes and one that will be further announced on our Amazon storefront.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Ultimately, Viggo has been a great mentor to me. Partners should be mentors and have a functioning symbiotic relationship, at the least. We formed a great partnership with the local Small Business Administration office run from the Davis-Ogden-Weber Applied Technology Center here in Utah.

There are various resources for applying for microgrants and loans. The fountain of help online is countless. There is nothing like going live to a local mastermind group but they can also be found online as well. If anything at all, if you surround yourself with others that challenge you to be better and aren’t afraid to give counsel, then you are off to a great start.
