Check Out Gyovanna Nelson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gyovanna Nelson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a wife, mother and follower of Jesus. I was born and raised in Mexico City. 13 years ago I met my husband and started a life in the United States. I never imagined I would be in the Bakery business as I have a Masters in Marketing and Business and lack a sweet tooth! Everything started in the middle of the pandemic. On my son’s birthday, my mother and I decided to make him a cake because everything was closed. We enjoyed the process so much so that we decided to make cupcake samples for our neighbors. The feedback was so amazing! From there, we decided to start a home-based business making cakes. We began taking cake decorating courses online and buying inventory. Before we knew it, my parents and I had improved our skills and realized that our business was really taking off.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Our journey has been for the most part very smooth. As we continue to Master our craft, our clients are requesting more and more detailed cakes such as gravity cakes or large wedding and Quinceanera cakes and we welcome the challenge. One of our biggest struggles has been an issue with the trademark of our original name. Overnight, we lost our Facebook page along with the thousands of clients that we had worked so hard over a year to gain. All our messages were gone and it was an immense struggle to try to reconnect with all our clients and let them know we were still here! We were forced to change our name, but with the support of my husband, we were able to rectify the situation. We updated our website and Facebook page and were eventually able to regain our original clients. Thanks to God our business is thriving and is better than before!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We make custom cakes. Everything is personalized from the theme to the color to the flavor. Although we make cakes with buttercream, we specialize in cakes with fondant detailing. All our fondant work is made in house and our decoration is something we have come to be known for. We would say the thing that most sets us apart is the amount of detail we put into our work. We are proud of the fact that we have never canceled an order and that while our cakes are not only beautiful, they taste amazing too! We have surpassed our own expectations and could never have imagined that we would be making the types of cakes that we do now.

What makes you happy?
My first priority is my relationship with God and my family. They are what keep me going every day. My favorite part of our business is seeing our customer’s faces when they see the cake we have created for them. It makes us so happy and gives us the motivation to keep going.
