Check Out Jordin Hageman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordin Hageman.

Hi Jordin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
My name is Jordin Hageman. I’m 29 years old from Littleton, Colorado and I’ve owned a cake decorating and baking company called The Cakery Pastry Studio for almost 10 years now. I became a mom when I was 19 years old (pregnant at 18), dropped out of college, and dedicated my life to raising this little girl (and myself!). A friend of ours asked if I would make his daughter a little birthday cake, and I agreed- thinking he just wanted me to bake something and slather some store-bought frosting on top. He showed up with the makings for a massive, two-tier princess castle and I dove right on in! I enjoyed the process so much and while it was really nothing special, it ignited in me that it wasn’t too late to go back to school, to be something besides a mom. I ended up going back to college full time to earn my Professional Baking and Cake Decorating degrees and Business Management degree, while also working full time to support us. I continued to make cakes in my spare time and focused on making something of myself, without losing focus of my little girl and first and foremost, being there for every step of her life. I’ve got another little one now and it continues to fuel my desire to show them that there is no roadmap to success, there is only whatever path you’re on. I am so grateful for that first night, being elbow deep in powdered sugar and doubt, and for what it opened inside of me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were SO many struggles! Many nights spent wondering who I was to assume that I could juggle all of these things: a toddler, a small business, work, and college (two colleges, actually). There were struggles of always being too young to have a child of whatever age my daughter was at the time, and people both personally and professionally dismissing me for believing I was in over my head or not focused. Aside from being a young mother, being a young professional was (and still is) arguably even more difficult to overcome. People assume that being young means you have less education and experience. You have to work twice as hard, have the best website, the best social media presence, the best reviews, the best portfolio, be the best professional, to show that you deserve to play in the big leagues. There’s a very small margin for error when people have already halfway dismissed you the moment you answer the phone. However, through it all, I was incredibly fortunate in that I had an exceptional family who helped me with anything they could in those early years, whenever they could and without them, I certainly wouldn’t have pulled it off. I also have an incredible husband who never bats an eyelash at being wherever I need him to be.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a woman owned-and-operated home-based cake decorator and baker. I specialize in celebration cakes, cake pops, and cupcakes of all varieties- weddings, birthdays, bat mitzvahs, holidays. I don’t have a lane; I try to dabble in all of it and cast my net as wide as I can. I love the challenge of hyper-realistic cakes (very on-trend right now), the excitement of wedding cakes, and the creative outlet I find in birthday cakes. I would say a couple of things set me apart- the ability to sculpt a 3-D cake is something that a lot of cake decorators steer clear from, and for good reason. It’s hard and it’s messy and if you mess it up, you gotta start from scratch but I find that I’m quite good at it and that makes it all worth it. Similar concept goes for hyper-realistic cakes. They’re very time-consuming, a lot of prep work and patience and many bakers simply don’t have the time for them. Finally, I deliver! All over the state of Colorado. Delivering a massive wedding cake is daunting, but I’ve never had an issue with it and I find that it allows me to access clients far and wide.
