Community Highlights: Meet Amber Burr of Daddy’s Homemade

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Burr.

Hi Amber, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Dannie is a stay-at-home dad who started taking a closer look at all the high fructose corn syrup and other artificial ingredients in the pancake syrup our kids were eating so much of. Between our family and some health issues that developed, it was important to have a healthier alternative, so he started experimenting with his own syrups – mixing, matching, and calculating all-natural ingredients and flavors. He created our syrup with no artificial ingredients, no high fructose corn syrup and no preservatives. Our daughter is the pickiest eater, so when she approved the taste, we knew we were onto something. With the encouragement of Dannie’s mom, we started giving it to friends and family to sample. They loved it, he loved making it, and from creating the labels to taste testing, the kids loved being a part of the process. Our daughters love art and creating things, so when our oldest would bring home drawings of a family all the time, it became our inspiration to try some labels with them; having her hand draw each and everyone.

When we started getting more orders, we turned to our daughter’s friend’s mom, who owns a local advertising company, and with her help and some other local Colorado company’s help, they were able to turn the drawings and original labels into a brand and stickers for the labels. Our kids were amazed we could do that and grateful to not have to draw each one! Community and sustainability play a huge role in our personal lives, which have transitioned over to Daddy’s Homemade. Both Dannie and I are Colorado natives and I am an Evergreen native making our kids the third generation of Colorado natives. When Dannie was researching what type of container he wanted in the syrup; there was no question; it was going to be a glass jar to help lower our carbon footprint. They are better for the environment for the start; plus we wanted to be sure to provide a more unique look so people could reuse them for their own needs if they like and we also encourage people to return the jars back to us if they are just going to get rid of them. We also encourage food donations for the Mountain Backpack program at events and now we will also be donating a portion of proceeds to Wilmot PTA for any memberships.

From our ingredients to the hand-tying of the twine on our jars, we utilize a multi-step process of creating then packaging our products meticulously by hand to ensure every batch is of the highest quality. Dannie has found a passion for trying new flavors, and I love experimenting with what we can use them for. Having three young kids who never agree on anything makes meals difficult most days, so we created ten unique flavors that are available throughout the year, and we have new seasonal flavors throughout the year so there is always something for everyone. Even after customers have tried all of the flavors, there is always another seasonal flavor available or will be available soon. We started using it on our breakfast foods, but because of the unique flavors, it makes it easy to enjoy on just about anything! We started as Daddy’s Homemade Syrup but have went with Daddy’s Homemade when people started saying they would love to have homemade pancakes but didn’t have the time to make them. When Dannie heard that, he took his favorite fluffy pancake recipe from his mom, found some unique jars and created Daddy’s Homemade Perfect Pancake Mix. We listen to and value customer feedback which is another reason we now have ten flavors (not including seasonal) in four different sizes and pancake mix in three different sizes. Next in the future? Daddy’s Homemade Baked Goods…

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. I was actually pregnant with our third child when we decided to start experimenting and sharing the syrup and we turned it into an official business in Feb 2020, right before COVID. During the time of trying to get things started and sharing the syrup more, both Dannie and I were in and out of quite a few doctor’s appointments for various things. As we started trying to go to events and start spreading the word about our story and products, we were not only trying to raise three young kids but keep them safe and do remote learning during the beginning of COVID. This was happening while I was working a full-time job and trying to keep up on which events were canceling or being postponed. There was never a dull moment since we started! We are very appreciative of everyone’s patience and support during our first year!

We’ve been impressed with Daddy’s Homemade, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Often times when you are shopping at markets and events, there are many vendors offering similar products. We have yet to find any products similar to what we offer and the containers we offer them in. When we show them to a market/event coordinator or a store, there is no hesitation about them wanting our products. There are plenty of syrup and pancake mixes out there, but we are the only ones that make some of the flavors we do and the only ones that make it all-natural. Our syrup also sets us apart from others because we not only use it on our breakfast foods, but it is delicious on so many other things as well. Even if someone isn’t big on pancakes or waffles, we have you covered! It makes an amazing sweetener or topper! We are currently a certified business operating under Cottage Foods laws of Colorado. For the time being, we can ship anywhere within Colorado, and you will see us at events and markets or online and there are some locations we are able to sell our products from as well that are always updated on our website and in our social media.

We have many customers that like to buy our products and ship them to their friends and family in other states as gifts. We can offer volume discounts for example for a client, staff/employee gifts (which became very popular last year). We can make customizable gift baskets for holidays or customized orders. We offer so many different options; if someone sees one of our packages online or in one of our locations but wants something different, we are happy to work with you! We are so proud to be able to have our young kids see something they helped create from the beginning and be a part of the processes from beginning to end. There are so many valuable things we are able to teach them when it comes to owning our own business and putting our mind to something and making it happen!

Our story and the challenges we have faced just within the last year set a high expectation and inspiration for our kids about family, work ethic and hard work, teamwork and perseverance in which we hope will help them throughout their entire lives. From our family to yours, we inspire the joy of creating kitchen memories through food, family, and fun by producing high-quality, all-natural homemade syrups and ready-to-blend breakfasts while supporting sustainable packaging. Try our all-natural, healthy syrups made from limited ingredients. We have flavors you can’t find anywhere else. And, from pancakes to coffee, even ice-cream, you can top off just about anything with them.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
One of the first things we notice about our products is the color of our syrups. They are not the color you would expect for certain flavors. For example, the cherry is clear. This comes from not having the artificial coloring and ingredients found in most syrup. It was so much fun when we first created the Chocolate syrup. We took a glass of milk and put some of our Chocolate syrup in it to make Chocolate milk. We gave it to our kids, thinking it was regular milk and seeing the surprise and delight on their faces when they realized they had chocolate milk that was white! They asked how we did it and decide to call it Daddy’s Magic Milk!
