Community Highlights: Meet Brianna Roybal of Foothills Picnics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianna Roybal.

Hi Brianna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Grand Junction, and I moved to the Front Range in 2018. I was a Certified Nursing Assistant for 9 years. I was doing my pre-requisites for nursing school when I realized that I do not want student loans, so I decided to stop pursuing nursing school. I wanted to start a small business where my passion for helping people could still be done. One night, I was on TikTok, where I viewed a viral video of a luxury picnic. This inspired me to pursue my own concept and within three months, Foothills Picnics was up and running! My boyfriend is a software engineer; he helped create my website, and I started shopping with a small $500 start-up budget! I thrifted my first table for just $10 and started small by only offering two-person picnics. I slowly started working my way up to six people’s picnics, and now, in 2022, I can now accommodate up to 15 people. In October of 2021, I knew I needed to come up with another service to make this an all-year-around business, so I began offering luxury slumber parties!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall it has been a smooth road and very enjoyable running this business. There were some learning curves along the way, and I am still learning something new every day. My first practice run of setting up a picnic went horrible, as it was very windy! I had to learn how to stake things down and buy heavier decor. When I first started, I had a Ford Focus, which is a very small car, so the tables, pillows, and everything I needed would barely fit. I made it work for a few months but eventually traded that in for a bigger SUV. I also live in a condo and there is limited storage space, so I had to get vacuum seal bags, and shelves. I offered food during my first year and partnered with other businesses like Poeme Macarons. I learned that food wasn’t worth the hassle of getting certified, the logistics of keeping it cold, the extra time driving to pick up the food items, etc. For the year 2022, I no longer offer food and it is up to the clients to bring their own refreshments. It was a hard choice to make but I am happy with my decision!

Even after 1.5 years of running Foothills Picnics I am still learning and growing each day!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We stand out from our competition for a number of reasons. Our booking process is very easy, as it is not inquiry-based, so you simply choose a venue, a date/time, add-ons, and then show up! Also, in our pricing model, we have a base package that helps keep the cost down for customers, and I really try to make it as affordable as I can. We have a wide range of add-ons and venues to choose from, and I always try my best to accommodate special requests.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I would say I am a calculated risk-taker. I did not go to the bank and take out a huge business loan. I desired to grow organically, so I started with a small $500 budget, and all revenue went back into the business. By doing it this way, it was less risky! When added the slumber party service, I attempted the same business model: I only offered up to four beds and two themes, now I have six themes and offer up to eight beds.

My advice to anyone wanting to start a small business is to not overthink things! You will not have everything you want and need when first starting out, things just take time! Don’t be afraid to start with what you have!

  • Base Picnic for two people starts at $159
  • Base picnic for fifteen people starts at $699
  • Base slumber party for two starts at $199
  • Base slumber party for eight starts at $499
