Community Highlights: Meet Del Jolly of Umbo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Del Jolly.

Hi Del, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My natural medicine journey started with The Realm of Caring nonprofit supporting families using cannabis for seizures and other ailments. After learning that cannabis is a medicine for these families, I knew I had to dedicate my life to educating people, like myself, who misunderstood these medicines. I then worked for Charlotte’s Web for 3 years and immersed myself in plant medicine.

I realized in 2017 that my perception of psychedelics was similar to cannabis years earlier. I discovered that there was an initiative being put forth by Kevin Mathews (Decrim Denver Campaign manager) to decriminalize psilocybin in the city of Denver. I immediately got involved and became the campaign’s Out Reach Director. We won the popular vote on May 7th, 2019, becoming the first municipality to make any change to drug laws about psychedelics.

Since then, over 15 cities and 2 states (Colorado just passed Prop 122) have decriminalized or legalized psychedelic medicines. I also knew there would be many folks who don’t understand how to use these substances so we launched Unlimited Sciences, our psychedelic research non-profit. We collaborated with Johns Hopkins of the world’s largest observational research registry and will publish this year. This data can info the community as to what we are seeing in the general population to help mitigate risks.

I started Umbo, a functional mushroom company with former professional athletes, Jake Plummer (Bronco’s QB) and Rashad Evans (UFC Champ). We sell high-quality, great-tasting, functional mushroom products that help unearth people’s potential. We intend to use corporate social responsibility to give back to Unlimited Sciences through Umbo.

We are working hard to educate about the benefits of all mushrooms and build community through our events like our Super Bowl health and wellness event, SXSW, and The Mushroom Summit which we will host at the Denver Convention Center June 19-20th

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It certainly has not been a smooth road and with all start-ups, especially in the era of covid, we have struggled. Finding the right teammates, and supply chain, and educating the consumers have all been challenges. But we’ve remained diligent and continued to chip away to finally gain some ground.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Umbo?
Umbo is a functional mushroom company developing products and education to inform the community of the power of mushrooms. Founded by professional athletes, Jake Plummer and Rashad Evans, we intend to change the narrative on all mushrooms and their ability to help humanity. We sell performance capsules, delicious-tasting functional food bars, and a brand-new line of alcohol-free mushroom tinctures.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Umbo was created to help support responsible psychedelic research through Unlimited Sciences. We intend to conduct two amazing studies involving NFL and UFC athletes. We hope to announce more very shortly.
