Community Highlights: Meet Jen Donovan and Mike Welch of Soothe Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Donovan and Mike Welch. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Jen Donovan is a mental health counselor, nutritional therapy practitioner, certified GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) practitioner, and a certified Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises provider. She experienced her own major nervous system health crises at the age of 25, developing dysautonomia and mast cell activation syndrome after a lifetime of general mental and physical health struggles. When conventional medicine did not have answers, she turned to her own research to find a deeper understanding of the brain and nervous system in order to heal herself.

Mike Welch is a personal trainer and certified Neuromeditation coach. Mike also struggling with significant mental and physical health issues including ADHD, anxiety, depression and PTSD. Mike turned to movement and meditation as methods of addressing his health in an accessible and holistic way.

When Mike and Jen met, their interests in understanding and working with the nervous system collided in profound ways. Soothe Wellness was developed as a way to help people access nervous system release and regulation when other modalities may feel inaccessible and overwhelming. Their dream is to provide people with an immersive sensory and somatic healing experience.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We launched Soothe Wellness right at the beginning of the pandemic. Safety has been a concern since we do our workshops in person. While we have also offered online coaching and workshops, our proprietary protocols require a fully immersed experience. Similarly, we find that people have deeper healing experiences when they share it with others due to the phenomenon of nervous system co-regulation. Navigating the ups and downs of the pandemic has been a ride! Nevertheless, after two years of isolation and fear, the Soothe experience is needed by people more than ever so that we can come together to heal in community.

We’ve been impressed with Soothe Wellness, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Soothe Wellness, we believe that the nervous system is fully capable of self-healing when given the right environment. Our current social conditions often leave us feeling confused, afraid, and unsafe. We understand the long-term effect that this has on the health of our nervous systems. With our combined expertise in using meditation, movement, visualization, somatic awareness, and other techniques, we have developed ways to help cue a sense of safety in the nervous system so that our innate self-regulating, trauma-releasing and physical repair mechanisms are stimulated in the body and brain. We take pride in being trauma-informed and mental health focused in our work. While practices such as yoga, standard meditation, or talk therapy can be beneficial for many, for other people they might not feel accessible, especially if you already have a dysregulated nervous system. We consider the unique needs of people coming from diverse life experiences and neurotypes.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
We travel full time, towing our equipment for Soothe workshops with us all over the country! Sometimes we wake up in beautiful national parks- and sometimes, we wake up in Walmart parking lots! This lifestyle provides a lot of dynamic stimulation for us, and we are constantly learning new things about the brain and nervous system that we integrate into our workshops.
