Community Highlights: Meet Robyn Otero of The JOY of WAX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn Otero.

Hi Robyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I had my first facial at the age of 21, I knew I wanted to be an Esthetician. I loved the relaxing atmosphere and all of the skincare products! When I graduated college with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, my goal was to open my own salon. I then went to beauty school nights and weekends for my esthetics license and became licensed nine months later. I converted a spare room in my condo into a spa room where I waxed and gave facials to friends and family. I was married, moved out of state, and had the ability to stay home with my two kids for six years. Once my youngest was in Preschool, I was ready to work part-time. I applied at a nearby waxing franchise and was hired immediately.

During training, I was most nervous about performing the Brazilian wax service (all hair removed from the pubic region). I had never had one, nor had I ever performed one (we weren’t allowed at beauty school). But after just a few seconds of observing one being done, I was confident I would be fine. Over the eight years of working part-time there, I perfected the Brazilian and it became my favorite service to perform. There came the point when I started to feel stuck, so I explored the option of living out my dream – starting my own business! There was a Sola Salon Studio just up the street that had a perfect room available. Everything fell into place and I moved in December 2019. A friend who had left the waxing franchise to learn lash extensions approached me and asked if we could share the space. I couldn’t be happier! She loves the beauty industry as much as I do and it’s fun having a partner to bounce ideas off of.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Unfortunately, the day after I left the waxing franchise, I was hit with a legal battle that lasted a year! On top of that, COVID hit and we were shut down for six weeks. There were some really tough days, but I never doubted my decision to open my own business. Because we love what we do, my business partner and I pressed on with the hope that eventually, our business would thrive. It’s been a year since we reopened, and we are so grateful to see our books filling up!

As you know, we’re big fans of The JOY of WAX. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
The JOY of WAX is a lash & wax studio in Centennial and is run by myself and my business partner, McKenna Cox. We both specialize in Brazilian waxing and McKenna also specializes in lash extensions. We provide fast, thorough waxing services in a clean and professional environment. We enjoy helping women feel accepted and more confident in their own beauty. For Brazilians, our goal is to get women waxed quickly and thoroughly with the minimum amount of pain. McKenna’s lash extension technique, along with quality products, allows for fullness and retention without ruining the natural lashes. We are most proud that women trust us with such intimate parts of themselves, and we enjoy getting to know them! We perform full body waxing, along with brow and last tinting. We retail brow and lash products, body wash and lotion, exfoliating scrubs, and ingrown hair prevention products.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think the beauty industry will see a spike this year due to people being quarantined and afraid to be in public. They are going to need some grooming! Self-care seems to have become more prevalent during/post COVID and that can include body waxing and lashes! Women feel pampered by having these services done. I often hear “I feel like a whole new woman!” at the end of a service, and I love it!
