Conversations with the Inspiring Alyssa M Guzman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa M Guzman.

Alyssa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my blog in 2017, a little after my son turned one. I debated for several months and wrote posts I never shared. After a lot of back and forth and research, my husband gave me the final push of encouragement.

It all started because I wanted to connect with other people. When my son was a month old, my husband left for military training. I was in this brand new role as a stay at home mom and for the first time since I was 15, I wasn’t working or in school. I didn’t have friends nearby it felt isolating. At the time, I was also working through some stuff and it took a while for me to even leave the house by myself. I gradually started slow, by taking walks with my grandfather. Then, it was just me and my son going on our own adventures to museums and new parks. But once again, that loneliness began to creep back in, you can only have so many one-sided conversations before you need to actually talk to another adult.

I took the leap and created my Instagram and website. At the time, I started my blog, I thought we would only have Callisto, hence the name of the blog and all the social media handles. That has since changed since we welcomed our baby girl six months ago. I’m once again working on myself, and the blog may be shifting to a wider range of topics that includes more of my own personal interests, but of course, still mom stuff and adventures.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The journey, for the most part, has been smooth, I’ve had a lot of blog posts that are a miss and three that are in my own opinion and in comparison to my other posts a hit. I’ve been patient with my blog and Instagram. And when things in my personal life get rough, I’ve given myself the grace to take the time I need, and take a break from it all.

My advice for other women would be to just do it! Don’t overthink it. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. What you post and what you create your people will find you! Be authentic. And never hesitate to ask questions!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
My blog is a little everywhere. Mom stuff, documenting events and adventures, recipes, and favorites. My Instagram is more daily life. Sometimes seeking advice, sometimes what we did that day, and things I love like hiking, meditation, and art.

I’m most proud of the work I’ve put into it all, I do everything myself nothing is automated or done by an app, it’s me liking and commenting on your posts, it’s me pinning your pins on Pinterest. It’s just me, up late, putting in the time.

I feel I’m pretty relatable to most people in that I’m trying to find a way to use my creativity to live a healthy balanced life. It’s easy for me to get caught up in my identity as a mom, so making time to balance that with my own interests is important to maintaining a balanced identity that gives and receives. I enjoy and believe in practicing meditation, so I try and share what has helped me. Since I’ve received so much help and support from others, I also try and share the things I come across.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
My childhood experiences taught me, that if you’re going to do anything, you need to believe in yourself and not look for any outward approval. It’s got to come from within you.
