Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Gillit.
Ashley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
To know our story, is to know how I grew up. As a kid, I remember my mother, my aunt and I would drive around with a newspaper on Saturday afternoons looking for garage sales or shopping our local thrift stores for fun and unique pieces. As far as I knew, that’s what everyone did at my youthful age! My love for all things thrifty grew and grew to the point that malls didn’t even cross my mind, an oddity for anyone in high school.
Fast forward 25 years and here we are! However, let’s not skip over my Bachelor of Science in Apparel & Merchandising, which was a great deal of hard work! But who knew all those Saturdays spent circling addresses on a newspaper would lead me down the entrepreneurial path to owning a resale boutique.
We’ve owned and operated Ashley’s Attic for almost seven years. We began small, literally. Our first place was 400 sq ft and open two days a week while I worked my corporate retail position to make the ends meet. In the midst of our grand opening, my husband and I found out we were expecting our first child! A lot to take on as I reflect back…
So, here we are today, operating from a victorian home built in 1910 complete with stain glass details, hardwood floors, a white picket fence and let’s not forget the infamous creepy basement. We are now open four days a week with my mother, Cherie, and I closely working side by side. We are a family-owned business where each member has their role. At any given time, you could meet my dad Chuck, working on light fixtures or watering the garden, or my husband Rick, bringing us much needed coffee & moral support. And my son who has grown up in the store! He’s now almost six and in kindergarten. How time flies, especially when you are building a business and a first-time mom!
Has it been a smooth road?
I wish I could say that I opened my resale boutique and quit my day job! But unfortunately, that’s not how to story ends! I worked two jobs, one that paid by the hour and one that, well, didn’t. I was pregnant, I was tried and I was scared but determined not to fail in pursuing a dream. To be honest, we faced struggles (and still do!) all along the way. To name a few, we’ve faced obstacles in finances to people who thought we’d fail, and everything in between But the worst struggle, of course, is self-doubt. Can I really do this? If I’m being perfectly honest, self-doubt and my unbelief was a struggle (and still is). Being an entrepreneur takes guts and iron steel at times. I don’t think being a small business owner you ever learn everything you need to know, as they say, the struggle is real! But I also, truly believe that my faith has brought me through each of the struggles and He has guided me along the way. I turn to my family and my faith in times of doubt and in times of struggle. The journey I’m on isn’t by accident but on purpose. I believe that’s true for anyone who’s taking the leap of faith into the entrepreneurial boat! I have a purpose. YOU have a purpose!
My advice to other women out there starting this journey would be to stay strong and stay the course. We are all faced with obstacles and struggles, especially as an entrepreneur. But don’t give up! Find others out there who are in your same boat and support one of them. Supporting others in this journey gives me energy, comfort and the ability to take a deep breath and say, I’m not alone! We need small business owners to thrive so why not spread the love?
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Ashley’s Attic story. Tell us more about the business.
Ashley’s Attic specializes in resale fab finds all at an affordable price! We love to hang out with you while you shop and maybe, just maybe, push you out of your comfort zone to wear that leopard print! The beauty of our boutique is that you never know what you’re going to find. Every day is a treasure hunt.
We handpick each piece that you’ll find. We carefully inspect, steam and get it ready to find its forever home. Our victorian house has four rooms where you can shop our selection of tops, denim, blazers, skirts, dresses, handbags and of course jewelry. I love designing and stretching my creative mind so each week the store is rearranged, revamped and given new life. Nothing stays the same for long around here!
What I love most about Ashley’s Attic is the feel you get when you walk in. From the stain glass windows that let the sun into the vanilla spice candle burning, it feels like home and place to enjoy the weekend. You’re always greeted with a smile because each customer is important to us and you’re one of the family. We truly enjoy what we do and we have fun!
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
Well, without a doubt, my mother Cherie. She is a constant source of inspiration. She had humble beginnings back in West Virginia and many obstacles to overcome. To hear her journey is always that extra push I need to get through.
She has always believed in me and has always believed I could do anything. I’ll never forget the time I was learning to swim. She sent me off on the bus, my face pressed to glass, crying in fear. I didn’t want to swim, I couldn’t swim! How could she be so cruel?! To this day, I laugh. As all mothers do, they force you to face your fears, do what’s right and ultimately teach you how to swim. I’m thankful for her life’s journey as it always keeps me focused, grounded and moving forward.
