Today we’d like to introduce you to Carina Chavez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I didn’t know I wanted to be a makeup artist right away. I started college and was taking different online courses and I just wasn’t feeling the “umph” with anything I was doing and whenever I would get down about something or I just got bored, I would always sit down in my bathroom with a little mirror and just started creating something. I never knew what I was creating but it always found it’s way. My makeup school definitely helped me progress in the field and I’m very thankful. Actually, the 14th marked four years as a freelance makeup artist!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road to success is smooth. But it has been a great journey. I always go through ups and downs, wanting to make my career excel faster or just stop altogether. I know this is what I’m meant to do because as soon as I get my hands on makeup and I’m getting ready to do a look for a bride, model, or myself… it just feels right.
If you’re passionate about something – go for it. I know that there will be times when you want to give up or you made a mistake but just know that if it’s meant to be, your hard work will pay off!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a freelance makeup artist and hair stylist. I just finished my schooling to become an esthetician from Aveda in December and I’m studying for my written exam which is in a few weeks!
I specialize in prom, boudoir, and bridal makeup looks as well as bridal hair designs.
I am proud as a makeup artist to be a “beautician – therapist”! I know especially on big days you need some quiet time and I love being your confidant, even if it’s only for a couple of hours. I’ve always been the type of person people feel comfortable around and I take that badge of honor with pride.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I always like to keep Instagram and Pinterest accessible. I want to know what my clients have in mind for their vision and work out different looks.
I also love Facebook! Please tell me I’m not the only one who loves the cute puppy videos!
