Conversations with the Inspiring Cassandra Severns

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Severns.

Cassandra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been different or at least felt like I was different from those around me. I had lots of friends growing up, and I did the things the other kids did, but never felt truly a part.

I am the oldest in my family and there has always been this pressure to set an example, to lead the way, to be an adult before you were ready to do so. I was the first to graduate high school and go on to college.

This was the turning point in my life. College is where my story really begins. I lived a fairly sheltered life and college changed everything.

My first semester was awful, being away from home, feeling lost, alone, and different from everyone. This was the first time besides a handful of sleepovers that I had been away from home. It took a toll on my body. I got very sick. When I came home for Christmas, I had some tests done and found out I had developed very serious food allergies, causing me to be sick all the time.

I struggled through college with my new-found allergies and still continued to be sick. I spent eight years sleeping in a bathroom every night. No doctor, no specialist, not a single person in the western medical field could tell me why or what was wrong.

A few years after college I got a position at an acupuncture clinic a where everything changed. The woman working in this clinic genuinely cared about every person including me! They spent three months working with me. One day, while getting acupuncture the woman was feeling my different pulse points and all the sudden said I know what’s wrong! She had me go get a test done on my spleen. Sure enough she was right! My spleen had a toxin in it that was causing all my ailments for eight years and was slowly shutting my whole body down.

I took this woman’s advice and started taking a custom blend of Chinese herbs she made from me and two months later I was all better! I spent the next year rebuilding my body, my mind, and my spirit.

Living a whole life, full of positivity, and doing what is best for me, is where you find me today. I am a yoga instructor and an aromatherapist. I am an educator sharing my knowledge and experiences with others. I believe that there is most definitely a time and place for western medicine however eastern medicine should also be a part of our daily health care. I teach others about non-toxic living, self-care, balancing work and home, and how little changes can drastically upgrade your health.

I lived for eight years feeling helpless. I don’t want others to feel that way. There are tools and ways we can always improve.

We only get one life, one body, and we should treat ourselves with respect and love. Our bodies are amazing always sharing information with us we just have to learn how to listen.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The journey to a healthier, happier life is not easy, in fact, living is hard; dying is easy.

Life is hard, very hard. There are lots of ups and downs. The key is grace. Give yourself grace. You are human, you’re going to make mistakes, in fact, I hope you make lots of mistakes. Mistakes are where growth happens.

In my life, I have made too many mistake to count. This is the 3rd company I have tried to start. I am not giving up. I am determined to succeed. This does not mean I will be successful at this business, no it means I am open and ready to fail and learn from my mistakes.

If we never jump we will never know where the ground truly is or what it feels like to fly. If you’re out there wondering how you’re going to make it through the day, try living moment to moment the best you can.

Each moment is a gift as the next moment is not promised. We are always stronger than we think.

The best thing you can do is to reach out, ask for help. There is no reason to struggle alone. No matter what it looks like, ask for help.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Honest Haven LLC story. Tell us more about the business.
I am first and foremost an educator. My ‘why’ is education. Knowledge is powerful.

I want to share why non-toxic living is important and how this can help change your life, but I also want you to have the knowledge so you can make your own decisions on what is best for you.

I teach my clients how to properly use essential oils to aid in their health care. How making swaps in the home will improve your overall health, and how safer skin and beauty products will change your health for the better.

The beauty industry’s laws have not been updated since 1938!!! Since WWII, 80,000 chemicals have been introduced into our lives. In the US, we have only tested a handful of these chemicals for safety and we only ban 30. Other countries ban 1500. I want to shine a light on this, so you know what is in the products you’re using.

I bring this knowledge into my yoga classes as well. I teach private lessons, corporate, and small groups. I like the more intimate feel where my students can ask questions and truly get what they need. I incorporate essential oil into my teachings to help release tension, boost energy, and release self-doubt.

I don’t have all the answers but I care about each person I work with and if I don’t know the answer I will certainly find out.

We are stronger together than we are apart. My motto is healing from the outside in.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Being a woman, the biggest challenge in the health and wellness field is not being taken seriously.

I promote support for other women. Women need to cheer other women on. If one of us succeeds, we all succeed.

We are in competition with each other because we are stronger together than we apart.

As a woman, we are taught at a young age we are weaker, we are less than and it’s simply not true. We are the creators of life. We are connected to nature, we feel because the earth feels. We are not less than. We are just as much a part of the equation as others.

I strongly believe we are here to bridge the gap between Man and Earth. Gender has nothing to do with love, kindness, grace, or compassion; those are universal.

We are stronger together.
