Conversations with the Inspiring Julie Michelson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Michelson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My health struggles led me to my current path. In 2004, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. At the time, I was a single mom with three young children. Through the next decade, my disease progressed, and I accumulated three more autoimmune diagnoses, while eventually increasing my prescription count to ten. I had to stop working to save what little energy I had for my children. I later had to quit graduate school as well. My brain fog made it too hard to retain the information I was learning. In 2015, at the age of 46, I feared I wouldn’t live to see 50. (My father had passed away unexpectedly at age 54 when he had seemingly been healthy.) The doctors had told me that there was nothing I could do to slow my disease process except take my medications. I am so grateful that they were wrong! When my youngest begged me to do everything I could to make sure I wouldn’t leave her yet, it was time to figure some things out. I ignored the doctors and searched for resources. I read, studied, and experimented. I began to make diet and lifestyle changes that slowly improved my symptoms. Through continued learning and experimenting, my health continued to recover.

When I was well enough to do so, I returned to school. I decided to become a health coach so that I could help others do what I did. I then went on to become a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach because the Functional Medicine approach is useful for chronic illness. It is a root-cause medicine and searches for the underlying cause of illness instead of treating symptoms. Autoimmunity affects over 50 million Americans, and numbers are growing each year. It is time to reverse this trend.

Today I live a fully energized life! I am running my coaching business, always continuing to learn, and taking care of the six horses on my farm. My relationships are flourishing, as am I. I have found true wellness. I no longer live in fear of leaving my children too soon, and I made it to 50! Helping others take their power back and reclaim their health has become my passion. Reversing autoimmune symptoms is possible! I started Julie Michelson Coaching so that I can help people across the country live with less pain and more energy.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely had some bumps. I had never run my own business before. For me, coaching clients is the part that comes naturally. Being an entrepreneur has provided me many an opportunity to learn. My advice to anyone just getting started would be to be kind to yourself. There is a learning curve involved. Try to find a mentor or coach who can help you create a successful business. Mistakes lead to great things! If you have a passion, you will find your way.

What should we know about Julie Michelson Coaching? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in helping clients with autoimmunity reduce their symptom expression to regain a full life. I work together with my clients to create the changes that allow them to address the drivers of their inflammation and the underlying causes of their autoimmune illness. We work on an individualized plan that includes diet, stress management, detox, sleep, and movement. My personal experience with illness is an asset for my clients, as I can relate to what they experience. I walk alongside them as they create their new routines. I have a high touch practice that ensures that my clients are not alone on their journey. I only take a select number of clients at one time so that they are sure to get the best of me.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Find your passion and follow your heart. Be ready to learn the less exciting aspects of running a business and committed to executing. You will make mistakes! Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and carry on. Also, allow your vision to grow and change as you grow and change.
