Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Hertz.
Karen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Master’s in Business Administration with an emphasis in Entrepreneurial Studies at CU Denver. I have over 15 years of experience in the brewing industry including human resources, finance, project management, supply chain, distribution, sales and marketing.
In my early 30’s, I survived both melanoma and thyroid cancers, leading to a treatment regimen that included a gluten-free diet.
Once gluten-free, I struggled to find a great-tasting, 100% gluten-free beer. I was driven to solve this problem and spent years researching gluten-free ingredients, taste-testing alternatives, and gaining an understanding of brewing processes in order to create a better solution. Thus, the idea for Holidaily Brewing Company was born.
Since opening Holidaily in February 2016, our production has grown to ten times the amount of beer we brewed in our first year open. We operate a taproom that’s open every day of the week and features 10 beers on tap (every single one is gluten-free). In addition, we recently opened a production brewery which will help us distribute throughout Colorado and expand into other regional markets.
In addition to my role at Holidaily, I enjoy living in Golden with my husband, twin daughters and chocolate lab and taking advantage of all that Colorado has to offer.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My mom says that “nothing worthwhile comes easy”. Starting a business is no different. The road has certainly had its challenges. Educating people on what gluten-free beer is and proving that we really have made world-class craft beer that is gluten-free is one of our biggest challenges.
My advice for anyone just starting their journey is that they better know their “why” for starting a company. Money isn’t enough. There has to be a passion bigger than that. The passion and why is what will get you through the more difficult days.
My advice to women, in particular, is to be brave. Don’t ever use being a woman as an excuse to not accomplish something. If anything, being a woman gives you an edge and a unique perspective.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Holidaily Brewing Company story. Tell us more about it.
There are over 7,000 craft breweries in the United States. Only 14 of those are dedicated gluten-free breweries. Holidaily is the largest dedicated, gluten-free brewery in the United States. We recently won the gold medal at the 2019 Great American Beerfest. We are leading the gluten-free beer category with innovation and quality products for gluten-free consumers.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I listen to business books through audible regularly. Some of my favorite books recently have been “Extreme Ownership” by Jocko Williams and Leif Babin, “Shoe Dog” by Phil Knight and “Brewing Up a Business” by Sam Calagione.
There is a beer app called Untappd. It allows the public to review beers as they taste them. I like to keep an eye on how our beers are being rated.
I rarely go anywhere without having Waze open. I don’t have the patience to sit in traffic.
I am always following what’s going on with Holidaily’s social media. I like to know anything going on in the beer and gluten-free communities and social media is a great place for me to have a pulse on what’s happening.
