Conversations with the Inspiring Keely Berge Teynor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keely Berge Teynor.

Keely, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Honestly, I never thought I’d be a small business owner. I guess a part of me didn’t think that I had the experience in order to do so. With a Communication Studies Degree from Winona State University in Minnesota, coupled with a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology, I managed to complete my formal education without ever having taken a business class. However, I have spent the majority of my career in Recruiting and Human Resources.

After taking several years off to stay at home with my kids while they were young, and then going back to work part-time as an office manager at a local non-profit, I found myself going through a major life transition. During my divorce, I knew I needed to go back to my roots in HR/Recruiting in order to financially provide for my family’s future.

During that time, I took a couple of Independent Contractor Jobs as I was trying to figure out the right path for me. One of these roles was with Hire With Ease. I immediately loved the process – working with small businesses to help them find candidates for their open positions was so rewarding to me. It offered a great deal of variety, with an easy process for both the business owners and candidates. Then in June of 2018, the original owner of Hire With Ease (another successful female entrepreneur) was looking to sell the business.

After looking at all the due diligence documents and talking to a lot of smart people (both friends and family), it was an easy decision to buy Hire With Ease. I became the new owner August of 2018. This has, by far, been one of the best decisions of my life. For me, it not only gives me the opportunity to continue to make an impact with so many different small businesses, but it provides me with the perfect balance to be able be there for my kids when they get home from school, take time off to visit family out of state, and always be learning something new!

Has it been a smooth road?
For me, I felt really fortunate to be able to purchase an existing business. Since I didn’t have any previous experience running a small business before, I greatly appreciated that everything was already in motion and functioning when I started. I gave myself time to just be in the business for a bit to get a feel for how things operated. I was able to determine what worked really well for me, what things I wanted to modify, and if there were any new services I’d like to add.

I am a pretty fiscally responsible person, so for me, I have been nervous about spending money from a sales/marketing side. I have been very fortunate to have had slow and steady growth these past 16 months, and am very grateful for that. However, I did have a slower couple of months following a string of months with continued growth, and that was a great reminder that I need to be continually identifying ways for new business development.

My advice for young women would be to know that you don’t have to have to know how to do “all the things” before taking the leap towards small business ownership! There are so many resources available that I had no idea about when I started. Have faith in yourself, know that it’s okay to figure stuff out as you go along, and ask for help when you need it.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Hire With Ease story. Tell us more about the business.
Hire With Ease provides Hiring Assistance to small businesses without their own HR/Recruiter. So often we find that small business owners need to hire employees quickly but do not have the time and resources available to do so. As of November 2019, the unemployment rate is hovering at 3.5% (Bureau of Labor Statistics).

By partnering with HireWithEase, we can handle the time consuming, upfront work of the hiring process for you. Over the course of 30 days, your Hiring Specialist will get to know your business and culture, write a unique job ad and get it posted on the appropriate websites. All the candidates will come through our portal, fill out a customized online application and upload their resume. Your Hiring Specialist will analyze the candidate pool, select the top applicants to complete online personality and cognitive assessments, and conduct initial 30-minute phone interviews.

This in-depth process allows us to narrow the pool of applicants down to the top 3 – 5 candidates for you to interview. We will coordinate and schedule face-to-face interviews on your behalf. In addition, your Hiring Specialist can offer you suggested interview questions, or even consult with you in your decision-making process. For an additional charge, HireWithEase will also conduct reference checks on your top candidate(s), administer a background check (post accepted offer) and even offer benchmark testing for your other employees.

Our Standard Hiring Package Includes:

 • 30-minute phone consultation with your assigned Hiring Specialist to get an in-depth understanding of the job, pay, benefits and culture
 • Write and edit a job ad, then post through our Applicant Tracking System to various free websites
 • Up to $150 of additional paid job board posting fees
 • Create a customizable job application for each position
 • Resume and application review of all candidates
 • Coordinate and review two assessment tests (cognitive and personality) with the top applicants
 • Conduct 30-minute phone interviews with the top applicants
• Schedule and coordinate 3 – 5 face-to-face interviews with the top candidates on your behalf
 • Offer interview tips & suggested questions, if needed
 • Review top candidates to assist in your hiring decision, if requested

The majority of our clients are in the Denver area, however we assist companies all over the country. We specialize in entry to mid-level office positions in any industry. We have some flexibility to this, but this is our bread and butter and where we are able to find great candidates in the shortest amount of time.

We are different in that we are not a typical Headhunter/Recruiting Firm, who would charge 25-35% of an annual salary for placement. Nor are we a Staffing/Temp-to-Hire Firm that send you our employees. We essentially charge for our time to act as your in-house recruiter so you can continue to run your business. What is your time worth?

We are really proud of the fact that we can move really quickly through the process. As long as we get a good candidate flow, our goal is to have candidates for you to interview in 2-3 weeks. Sometimes sooner!

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
I have had the opportunity to work full-time before kids, be a full-time stay at home mom, work part-time (and try to balance both), and now being a full-time business owner and raising two kids. For me, moms inspire me, whatever path she chooses (or doesn’t get to choose) as it relates to work.

My family inspires me. My own mom had to work full-time from the time that my brother and I were six weeks old. I remember her telling me at one point — If you can, try and make financial decisions that will allow you to choose whether you have to work or not while your kids are young. My sister-in-law is a 6th-grade teacher and has such a positive impact on not only her own kids, but all of her students over the years. My aunts and cousins who live all over the country also inspire me. I talked to everyone one of them over the course of two family get-togethers to decide if I should buy Hire With Ease.

My girlfriends also inspire me — some of whom I’ve known since I was 6 … 13 … and those whom I’ve become friends within my mid-30s and 40s. We laugh together, support one another, go on girls’ trips, and even mountain bike together!

Other female business owners inspire me. Throughout this new journey, I have had such a great opportunity to meet so many wonderful women who are doing amazing things with their business and their lives.

Finally, Michelle Obama inspires me. She is a strong, smart, graceful woman who has worked very hard, and I believe was successful to find the balance of work and family.
