Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Jackson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lori. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My two greatest passions in life are my family and writing. Writing got put on the back burner while raising our kids, but as we approached our empty nesting stage, I felt prompted to start writing again. I had learned so much in my 27 years of child rearing, and I wanted to share those life lessons. So, when I launched my blog — Choosing Wisdom — in 2017, I was bringing my two passions together.
What began as an outlet for my writing has evolved into a sweet little community of women all searching for ways to become better versions of themselves. I like to think of Choosing Wisdom as a resource to help women (and men too) discover answers to life’s questions, find the motivation to try a new approach to an old problem, and feel inspired to keep doing the best they can.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had no idea what I was doing when I started, but I wasn’t afraid of doing the leg work to figure things out like: What are the benefits of hosted vs. self-hosted? How do I write the CSS code to change the look of my website theme? What is SEO? How do I interpret my Google Analytics – and what is Google Analytics? The questions have been endless, but I’ve always been able to find answers.
I think the key has been my determination. In the beginning, I didn’t even know where this dream was headed, but at each major intersection, I followed my heart and what felt right.
My advice for anyone starting a blog would be to do your research and make a plan, be flexible and follow your heart!
What should we know about Choosing Wisdom? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
When I was trying to decide on a name for my blog, I knew I wanted it to express my belief about how the culmination of our choices and experiences shape us into the person we are becoming. We each have unique challenges and different opportunities to choose how we will react, learn, and grow from life’s lessons. The name Choosing Wisdom seemed to be a perfect fit.
Choosing Wisdom is about harnessing the power of growth behind the stories in our lives. Learning from each other and deciding to rise above pain and disappointment for a happier more purposeful life. We all have our story – something hard that has changed us for the better. In the process of choosing to allow change to grab hold of us, we gain a little more wisdom, a little more light. Your story may be built upon your faith, your determination, or your hope. The compelling thing about our stories is their power to help us learn and grow stronger when we share them.
The majority of my content is from my own life and research, but I also include stories from who have grown from their choices in ways they hadn’t anticipated.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I have been drawn to other writers who specialize in a similar niche. Social media has been the best resource for connecting with them. I was told early on to find someone who did what I wanted to do well and then follow their example and then personalize it to be my own. What I’ve found is there aren’t any real quick-fix answers. It’s about doing the research and working hard.
I have wanted to create or find a Colorado bloggers support group for a while, but time and energy haven’t allowed that to happen yet.
