Conversations with the Inspiring Marlene Hernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlene Hernandez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Marlene. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a woman of 40 years of age. For almost 20 years, a mother to two young men and a beautiful girl.

I am a Latina who immigrated to the US at the age of 16 with ample desire to change my life and my destiny.

I have worked a variety of jobs, which have surpassed two at times. All with the focused goal of helping provide forms mother and younger siblings. Working has been a staple in my life. Only when I was very young did I not work. It has been through those experiences that I developed the vast desire to better my life. After getting married and having my first child, I went back to school and earned my GED. Years later, I enrolled in a community college to study business management.

My passion for the beauty industry and the ongoing journey to become a professional became the catalysts to begin a career change at the age of 32. In 2012, I enrolled in an esthetician program without a defined ending place. Upon completion a year later, I became licensed by the state. I was determined in putting my new knowledge into practice, thus with great effort, I opened a small skincare studio spa in Cherry Creek North. Unfortunately, my lack of experience and resources led me to close that business venture before a year’s time. At that moment, I felt defeated and disillusioned, and yet, never did I abandon the dream of becoming a successful esthetician and businesswoman.

With the passing of time, I focused my vision and collected my strength once again to embark on a new journey within the beauty industry. A trip to Toronto would mark the beginning of my training in the microblading sphere without knowing that this would truly become sought after catapult for my success. From day one, I acknowledged the challenge this area of beauty presented, but I also became enamored with the art of modifying a woman’s facial features in the most natural way possible. Something that was a variant from the traditional techniques.

Throughout the trip, I came to understand myself and goals. There were continued moments of realization about the path that now laid ahead of me, which started along the lines of becoming not just good, but a leading name in the field of permanent make-up and microblading. From that moment on, a marathon ensued with advanced trainings in the US and internationally.

As the awakening continued to evolve, I realized that we had very few options in the state to train develop skills in others. I decided to continue my personal and professional growth by becoming a certified instructor. For that step, I looked towards Everlasting Brows, a European company based in London who had spent their R&D in bettering and advancing techniques in micro-pigmentation for over 10 years.

The founders of the company, Monika Ludwizak, and Kintija Belska have been great mentors and I feel honored to work with them. They are women who are trailblazers, who have forged their company by empowering other women. Their brand has substance and passion. While others sell slogans and motivational phrases, Everlasting has invested in the science for each pigment formula, training manuals and even packaging receive the utmost care and detail while being developed. I believe that these two women with hearts of gold and brilliant minds are the difference makers behind every product from Everlasting. My colleagues in the company can attest to that. I am now working towards opening a school in Denver and teach the Everlasting techniques to others who want to join the field.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been easy to get to where I currently stand. When I first had my business, I came to learn, that no matter how well you can perform your skill or craft, sooner or later you’re dealing with a business-related challenge for which you aren’t prepared. As was the case with administration, marketing, accounting and legal issues. It’s there where you have to rely upon mentors. The worst case scenario for a beginning entrepreneur is wanting to resolve challenges without any help from more established practitioners.

I have to say that my biggest challenge has been learning language. I learned English as an adult and felt that I didn’t speak it well enough for people to understand me. I believed that this was a detriment. However, I learned to have more confidence in myself by being open to receiving feedback from people who surround me. They let me know how I’m doing and that makes me strive to develop that skill set even more.

My advice for young women entrepreneurs is to have a prepare themselves with knowledge about the industry they’re trying to get into and know-how things work. Secondly, have a mindset that is open and positive. This also especially true when mistakes are made. The more open you are to solutions, the quicker it is to act accordingly, move on and grow.

What should we know about Microblading Denver? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The rundown for my work is vast. There is a variety of treatments available. There are procedures for skincare, body treatments and esthetics. All of which are fascinating since you can see a difference from the first treatment for the majority of them. I fell in love with the esthetics portion and that is why I specialized in permanent make-up.

From the beginning, my clients really felt at ease and liked my style of creating something that is permanent (semi-permanent, in the case of microblading) yet with a supernatural feel. Some of my clients have recommended their family members and friends, particularly because of my style in enhancing their natural beauty. They also admire that I continuously train and travel to do so if necessary. The thing I am most proud of is that in just three years I have been able to receive my instructor certification from Everlasting Brows, which is recognized internationally.

What makes Microblading Denver different from other similar businesses is that I educate my clients thoroughly about their elected procedure. I do this before every procedure because to me it is paramount that they understand what will be taking place. I like to take care of my clients and that’s why I use the best quality products available in each procedure or treatment to guarantee the final result.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
My inspiration appeared before me at a Permanent Make-Up Conference in Utah in 2017. The two magnificent women who put this grand event together showed they had improved the industry and raised the standards. From then on, I knew that they would become influential people I wanted near me as I took steps into this industry. I was not wrong. They have a knack for understanding people individually, helping them unlock and reach their potential. They are Monika Ludwizak and Kintija Belska, owners of Everlasting Brows.
