Conversations with the Inspiring Mary McHenry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary McHenry.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hi there! I’ve been photographing weddings, families and companies big & small for over 15 years. I have lived all over from Maine to Spain to Oakland, CA.

The past four years I lived on a tiny island in the Bahamas called Elbow Cay. It was an amazing experience and that community will always be a part of my heart.

In August 2019, my family and I moved to Boulder. It’s been a HUGE change, to say the least, but we are really enjoying it -even the snow shoveling! I’m excited to meet new people here and tell their stories with my camera.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have been shooting professionally for about sixteen years and have grown so much as an artist and a business owner.

Some of the best lessons I have learned is to ask seasoned photographers for help and guidance, either through workshops or mentorships. Their wealth of knowledge will help improve your craft and business much faster than trying to figure it all out on your own. I plodded along for too long on my own! Once I reached out, my art and business really bloomed.

Along those same lines, it’s so important to build a community. Working for yourself is lonely! Finding friends in your field, both locally and online, will inspire your work and lift you up. Don’t be shy -put yourself out there. Be friendly and open! Ask questions and also offer help.

Lastly, be patient with yourself. It can take years to get to a place where you are consistently happy with your work and/or turning a real profit. Work hard and be kind -you’ll get there. 🙂

What should we know about Mary McHenry Photography? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My specialty is photographing people and their connections. It might be the connection you have to your child, your partner, your work, the beauty of the land you are standing in, and even with yourself.

To create photographs that authentically show this connection, I create a space filled with trust and comfort between myself and my client. It’s so important to how I work and it makes all the difference in the experience and the photographs. Authentic moments plus good light and strong composition feels like magic when it all comes together. 🙂

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Work hard, be kind and always keep learning.
