Today we’d like to introduce you to Missy Knight.
Missy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Photography was an interest of mine ever since I had gotten my hands on a disposable camera. Remember those? You’d snap pictures and you’d know the roll was out when you’d turn the dial for a new one and it would just keep going?! I never really knew what I was doing back then but I enjoyed preserving those memories and looking back through old photo albums growing up.
Fast forward many years until I had my first child. I wanted to capture each and every moment and every tiny detail but I wanted them to look like the professional photos we had taken by a friend and well, mine didn’t. Since we sure couldn’t hire our friend to go everywhere with us, I slowly started teaching myself how to take professional looking photos. That journey led me to start my own photography business so I could do the same for others.
Even that journey has evolved as I truly find myself in this giant photography world. My real passion in this field is to capture families unique connections with one another both in photos and in family Keepsake films. I hang out with families almost like I’m not even there and let them do their thing while I film and photograph them. Many people may not feel like their lives are all that beautiful or exciting but trust me, I find the beauty in those moments. It might be an everyday kind of beauty or beauty in an exciting adventure. My goal is to find and capture those connections and memorable moments within whatever setting is chosen for the session.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am incredibly lucky that I am able to run my business part-time. With a family and also teaching half day in Kindergarten, it can get to be a handful. Finding a balance of two careers and taking time for my family and myself can prove to be difficult at times but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
As for advice for those just starting out, there is a ton of advice out there for starting and running a photography business. Take it all in, learn what options are out there, but in the end, run your business the way it works best for you! Every business is unique and needs to be run that way. What may work for one, may not work for another. Success for one business won’t necessarily match success for another and that’s ok. Know what it takes for you to be successful and that’s what matters.
what should we know about Missy Knight Photography? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At Missy Knight Photography I specialize in family photos and films. Having the experience I do as a teacher helps in photographing families with children, especially small children who may not want to sit still for photos. That’s where I come in because I don’t want you to sit still! I want families to interact and be themselves so I can capture their connections and memories of their time together. I can come photograph and film both everyday moments or small (or even big) adventures.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
My most favorite photography book to date is David duChemin “The Soul of the Camera.” It is full of amazing insight and inspiration about loving what you do and enjoying the process along the way.
Hello Storyteller www.hellostoryteller.com has a fantastic blog and podcast where they talk about everything from photography, motherhood and other aspects of life. I’d highly recommend it.
Clickin’ Mom’s www.clicknmoms.com is the photography organization that I have learned the most from. I’m a member of the Clickin’ Mom’s community and have taken many breakouts and workshops through them as well.
