Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Sitler.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I crocheted as a hobby as a kid. It wasn’t until 2014 when I was diagnosed with depression for the first time due to an abusive relationship that I chose to use crochet for its therapeutic purposes. I made blankets, scarves, and more! My crochet skills became known and I was actually made fun of for having a hobby meant for “grandmas.” However, family and friends were supportive and that’s what mattered to me. In 2018, my husband recommended I pursue a business in crochet. At first, I thought he was crazy, but he believed in me. His love and support is what drove our business—CroChic Styles.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Creating a business built off a hobby was not as easy as I thought it would be. I had to start considering the quality of photos, return policies, pricing and so much more. It definitely wasn’t easy.
If you don’t know where to start, use the internet as a resource! I was inquisitive and read through all the blogs I could about starting a business and it helped greatly.
It’s also important to put yourself in the customer’s shoes and think about their experience. Most of our products are based on shipments, so we think about how the package arrives and how someone feels when they open it. That small experience for the customer can go a long way.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into CroChic Styles story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a modern crocheter that makes modern style handmade crochet products and the primary crochet hook tester for my husband’s handmade crochet hooks.
Most individuals compliment us for creating a modern appeal to crochet and crochet hooks. Our color choices for crochet products are based on color trends in the fashion industry. I absolutely love adding glitter to everything in my life, so our crochet hooks are filled with sparkle and that’s something that makes us unique.
I think what sets us apart is how much we value customer feedback. We are constantly asking for inputs and feedback from the crochet community and our customers. It truly creates an experience where they feel valued and their products are truly custom made.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
The most important advice I can give to women starting their careers is to support one another and be a mentor to others. It goes a long way. You learn from those you seek advice from and also the ones who are asking you for advice.
