Conversations with the Inspiring Tory Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tory Baker.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tory. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have spent my life studying many different art mediums. This has influenced the way I see and create my work. I found my love for photography early on in my childhood and continued to pursue art and photography in college. I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Pratt Institute.

I have always been interested in Portraiture, but it was after the birth of my first son Hudson that I felt a need to document Motherhood. We as mothers need our extraordinary lives documented in a beautiful and meaningful way. The photographs we create preserve our lives, and we can look back at our images and be connected to those moments, memories and feelings.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I am still on this journey of building a business that represents my version of success. During these last four years of running a business, being an artist, a mother, a wife, and a teacher, I have done a lot of growing personally and professionally. I have learned that building a business takes time, and moving slowly is ok. It has taken years to truly understand the kind of business I want, the type of work I want to create, and clients I want to create with.

Some advice I might offer to someone starting their journey is to try not to compare yourself to other business and life successes. It can be so frustrating when we compare and will hinder your own growth. Brooke Schultz said it best, “Chase your own version of success.”

What should we know about Tory Baker Photography? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a film photographer based in the Denver Metro Area. I specialize in Motherhood and Family Portraiture. I document the authentic heartfelt connections clients have with their loved ones. I use photography to capture the important and mundane moments with an artists approach. Through my artistic vision, my desire is to photograph loved ones with an understanding of who they are, and what is important to them.

My photographs are created using traditional analog film. The traditional film has the ability to accurately capture the light, beauty, movement, and emotion of my subjects. Film has allowed me to slow down my process. Loading the film, metering the light, and manually focusing, forces me to create and compose the images that I love. I strive to create beautiful, timeless images in a traditional medium.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
