Conversations with Amanda Ayala

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Ayala.

Hi Amanda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Amanda Ayala and I own Herky Jerk Ranch. My husband and I started this ranch a few years ago to provide our young girls with a country oasis where they could live and learn about life and values. We have horses and many other misfit animals that have made the ranch their home.

In addition, we own and operate a screen printing business from the ranch. We work tirelessly to create quality products and a family experience for our customers. In addition, I have a full-time career within the Department of Corrections, which keeps me very busy. I work hard to juggle this career, the ranch, and being a wife and mother; it is a balance.

In the past two years, our business has grown quickly. We are so grateful for our customers and their loyalty to us. The ranch and the business have been such a huge life lesson for our little girls. They are learning about work ethic, financial responsibility, ownership, and living a Christian lifestyle, all on their property. My goal is to raise two incredible human beings that thrive on setting and achieving goals, growing roots, and living a clean lifestyle.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. My husband and I have found ourselves working on orders throughout the night and into the early morning hours. We are not afraid to work hard, but it has forced us to find balance. We have lost friends along the way and have quickly realized how relationships can be built on foundations of necessity rather than love.

This past year has probably been the most challenging for us. Financially and revenue has increased 3 fold, however with that comes relationship struggles. Individuals that we thought supported our same goals and missions; have proved otherwise to us. That is a difficult chapter to navigate and still maintain our vision and accomplish our goals.

The other struggle is balance. My husband and I both had very successful careers, so growing our business from a side hustle to a full-time business was difficult. This year my husband leaped and resigned from his career to run the business for me full-time. It was a leap of faith for sure, but it has paid off and we could not be happier with this decision.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Herky Jerk Ranch is a place that I have created where individuals can come and feel loved and accepted. Yes, our main business is screen printing, but on any given day you can jump on a horse and take a trail ride. It is an escape for one’s soul. I longed for a piece of land I could call my own. I could love and tend to animals, I could cultivate the dirt, a place I could belong. The ranch is just that place. When we created our brand HJR, many people were attracted to it and what it stood for.

We started offering our clothing line displaying our brand, it took off. We have sold HJR gear all over the world and are so humbled that individuals would be proud to wear our family brand. This is the part of the company I love the most. I love talking about what HJR stands for and the quality of the products we make. I love collaborating with people to come up with the perfect logo for their design. Any chance I can bring people into what I get to experience every day….. is a great day.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
My all-time favorite saying is, “It Is What It Is”. I live by those words. This past year we have taken risks and had obstacles and experiences that have lifted the veil on many individuals we considered family and friends. We found it so important to remember your goals, what you want to accomplish, and that you will never please everyone. Not everyone will agree with your plans, they will judge you and they will challenge you.

I decided to hold close to those who supported us unconditionally and allow all others to fade out of our lives. In addition, not everyone is happy to see you succeed. That was a tough pill to swallow as well. We realized very quickly that having your goals, your dreams, and your mission outlined early on, assisted us in remaining focused during these challenging times. And I always say….. It Is What It Is.
