Conversations with Cristina Schutz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Schutz. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Jeremy and Cristina; Co-own Crate & Bloom and love everything business and being visionaries!

‘We love the ability to create, lean into our entrepreneurial spirit, and spread love through flowers!’

Cristina has been in the floral industry for 12 years but the last seven years have been focused on events and weddings. Providing a beautifully crafted vision come to life on such a special day!

‘Everyone deserves beautiful wedding flowers without feeling the need to break the bank!’ – Cristina

Jeremy and Cristina met through real estate where they teamed up to open a local, independent brokerage focused on first-time home buyers and the need to ensure everyone has housing opportunities!

With this passion to build business and community came Crate & Bloom! Where they found the balance of creativity, business, community, and most importantly fun and laughter!

Jeremy and Cristina began their partnership around real estate, opening their own brokerage in 2020; Tailor & Co Realty Group from this, they grew as business partners and business owners. They set out to help newly licensed agents begin their careers in a competitive field and to help first-time home buyers accomplish a milestone as homeowners!

It was hard. We had to learn a lot of behind-the-scenes business operations quickly! From how to build the business as a whole, recruit successful agents, and still produce for ourselves. It took a lot of tenacity and honestly, rejection. But the lessons from it have prepared us for the future. We are more resilient, we look at new endeavors with the understanding success won’t be instant. We were very ambitious with our goals in real estate, some of which we hit and some of which we were nowhere near them. This is that risk factor in owning your own business. Nothing is guaranteed, you have to set goals, have a plan and execute that plan. We have learned to be more patient that’s for sure.

“We both still love real estate and are actively involved in it. But we both wanted something more, a balance of owning our own business, being creative, and building community. It’s what we love.” Jeremy

After learning so much from the brokerage’ from marketing to compliance and being profitable business owners we took that into another passion, Crate & Bloom. Where they found the balance of creativity, business, community, and most importantly fun and laughter!

“There have been challenges and will continue to be. But, we enjoy that part. I used to be so scared of failure (sometimes still am) but I have learned over the years how much better of a business owner it makes me. Failure is just redirection and through it, we plan to do great things!” Cristina

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No way! There will always be struggles in any business regardless if it is new or seasoned. We learned this in real estate, sometimes no matter how hard you plan things happen. For Crate & Bloom, it has been balancing the very busy days with orders and then the lows. We are slowly getting a rhythm but we aren’t fully aware of the sale cycles and what to expect.

Sourcing flowers that meet are standards has been an adventure too! We want to ensure we can use any local farmers here in Colorado but also minimize as much of the ‘middle-man’ as possible when sourcing from other farmers.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Jeremy is a visionary- his ideas don’t stop! Whether it is coming up with a new line of products or seeing the future of Crate and Bloom in the next five years, he is ready to go!

Cristina is definitely the implementor in all our business endeavors, but when it comes to floral design, she runs with it.

We love a modern twist on the standard look of flowers in a vase. There is so much that can be done outside the ‘norm’ that we are always trying new things!

Events and Weddings are a favorite for sure, being able to capture a couple’s vision for their special day is a great feeling. Or being allowed to dream it up ourselves and present it to the client is what we are best at!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Starting a business is a risk. From the brokerage to marketing to Crate & Bloom, there is a risk within each business. I think many people often associate opening any business with financial risk. Yes, of course, there is this; however, it is not the only risk.

We have found one of the larger risks is whether will it succeed in general. Are we providing something people want and will pay for?

Being a small business owner comes with financial risk and the risk of rejection. But regardless, we keep telling ourselves that it is never a failure, just a redirection!
