Conversations with J.Decorian

Today we’d like to introduce you to J.Decorian.

Hi J.Decorian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Being an artist started for me as a young, vibrant Alabama boy with a passion for singing. I grew up a “choir kid” I started off in church then started doing school choir. I even got to do choir competition. Which pushed me to be a better performer. I started writing poetry in middle school then going into high school I started writing music. Which lead to me putting out my first single in 2017 “Temporary Lover” and have been dropping ever since. These elements and many more have brought me to where I am today as an artist.

I’m a product of a divorced family, born in Birmingham,AL. I moved to Denver when I was 15 I left and moved back to Alabama when I was 19 after attending MSU Denver. I decided came when I was 21. I’ve been doing music for the past five years professionally. In the process I have lost my father. Throughout these five years struggle and turmoil have  shaped J.Decorian into the strong Artist I am today. Growing up in Birmingham, AL and moving over 1000 miles away from everything I knew and loved helped me to discover who J.Decorian was and what he wanted.

Music gives someone like me an outlet because being in my family, I felt like an outcast after my dad passed in 2020, so my music became more of an outlet and a sense of refugee since the loss of my father. Who pushed me to be J.Decorian. Growing up my dad was a DJ in Alabama and I was right by his side and I knew then music is what I was GOING to do. Its what I was born to do. Signing was my gateway into writing music, then elevated my sound and I began rapping. I started off singing then came poetry then came songwriting then I started rapping each year it felt like I was unlocking more and more of my star power.

Now today I’m 22 years old fearless and ready to take the world by storm as J.Decorian the bonafide Singer-Songwriter-Rapper from the hoods of Birmingham Alabama making his way and paving a legacy for my family. Growing up, I didn’t have many positive examples so I strive to be that at this level in life. I can be an example for not just my family but for anybody who has ever felt unheard can now be heard and know if J.Decorian can overcome then you can too. Don’t let no one dim your light to make them seem bigger over you. Your worth more than what they try to treat you that’s a reflection of them.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it’s been far from a smooth and easy path. The past five years being in the music industry has had its hi highs and low lows. From moving back and forth to losing my dad, it has truly been a lot of ups and downs. Transitioning from being a child/teen artist to an adult artist was a big struggle trying to re-identify who I am as a person and artist. It pushed me to want and do bigger for myself. Also, being away from everything that made me who I am aided in me coming into my artistry. Coming  from Alabama the sound of music is way different than what’s heard in Colorado but to know I bridge the gap makes the struggles worth fighting through. These two places truly make up who I am. I’m so grateful that y’all reached out and took the time speak to me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
J.Decorian is a Singer-Rapper-Songwriter who specializes in Rap/Hip Hop and R&B. I am known for my witty and precise lyrics. I am known for helping people build confidence as I haven’t always  been the most confident. My music has helped me with my confidence and my self esteem. That’s what I want the world to take when they listen to me. I am most proud of my debut mixtape, “The Don Tape” it took years for me to get in a space where I was ready to release it. It shows growth, power, freedom, resilience, and confidence. It should show you how to over come. Some never thought I would over come. Now look at me lol. Something I pride myself on is really write all my own music, I independently record as well under my label “Teddy Bear Prod”. Things that set me apart from other artist is my passion, attention to detail, and the time I put into my artistry. My passion is what pushes me in a game full of artists who just woke up and decided to do music because of the social media wave we live in now. I’ve been singing since 6 or 7 years old. Been writing poetry/ rap since middle school so I feel like my passion is shown within my message.

Also, my attention to detail is In reference to my lyrics I have always had an eye for “barz” which is your punchlines and different literary devices to create lyrics that hit in your music and could be interpreted many ways. Also paying attention to some grammar rules help my music have order and structure. I  love the effort that   older artists like Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross and many more. Back in the day artists took time and wouldn’t half-step when it came to any aspect in the music and that’s the energy I was raised with as a young budding artist. That’s the energy I am bringing to the industry.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was shy to open up but when I did, I touched so many people. I was always the overly sweet, funny, and talented child. Who loved to try anything just to say hey, I did that. I dabbled in sports, acting, band, art, and many other things that lead me to being J.Decorian. A surprising interest is country music I loved country music growing up and still do. Also, yodeling which I love to do but rarely do because it’s more of a hobby that I do alone one day, I might take it to the main stage. They would describe me one always trying sing or do something musical always. Loud, maybe obnoxious, but a nice person who loved everyone. Now everybody got haters but this not y’all story. I was kind to every one I met until I felt other wise let’s say. Also want to use the end of this to say R.I.P to all my classmates who are no longer with us and pray everyone is doing well in life. These people know fetus or baby J.Decorian they have watch me bud into the artist I am today
