Conversations with Melissa DeMers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa DeMers.

Hi Melissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always been a creative, whether it be drawing, poetry, painting, crocheting, taking photos just sort of came…naturally. I had my daughter + when she was 5 years old, I got my first Canon DSLR camera + really, the rest is history. I started documenting her life + in the meantime, my friends + family encouraged me to pursue my artistry as a career. I am so happy they supported + encouraged me along the way. I absolutely LOVE what I do!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has it always been easy? Ha! Short answer? No. Nothing GOOD in life comes easy. Not one thing. It is hard work running a business, especially when you are the only person photographing, editing, marketing, answering emails, phone calls, texts, running to/from sessions, helping with wardrobes for clients…also just balancing work life with family life + personal time. I always have a hard time with balance. Sometimes I just have to mark “days off” on my calendar + spend some quality time with family + friends in order to have a life. It’s definitely a great problem to have, I feel incredibly blessed. But yes, there are always a few struggles here + there as with anything in life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a family + newborn lifestyle photographer. I also do special UNICORN sessions (yes, with a real live unicorn!). I love capturing moments + emotion. I focus more on the moments in between the poses. When you tickle your kiddos + that genuine laugh that happens…kisses that you steal from your toddler…hugs from your husband…those in-between moments are the ones that mean the most. I also love BRIGHT, CLEAN imagery. I love timeless looks.

I think what sets me apart from others is just my raw honesty. I try to be true to my brand, true to myself + to my clients. I am not perfect, nor do I claim to be. I get close with my clients, they become more like family to me. I try to put myself in their shoes while I am photographing them, I think of what moments + photos they’d like captured + I shoot from the heart (no pun intended).

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I feel like I am unique in that I am a veteran of the United States Air Force. I am so proud to say that I have served my country, it fills my heart with pride. I am also a cancer survivor (melanoma).
