Exploring Life & Business with Christine Mikulas of Hearth House Venue

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Mikulas.

Hi Christine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
What do you do with a 5,000 square foot ugly building that used to be a Post Office? Remodel and open a Wedding Venue! It was a real “move that bus” moment when we blew the roof off (literally) and converted an old Post Office in Monument Colorado into one of the busiest, most beautiful, and most affordable Wedding Venues in Colorado Springs.

After experiencing firsthand with my daughter’s wedding, just how insanely expensive it is to host a wedding, I decided to build something very different. My goal was to create a Wedding and Event Venue that is equally or even more beautiful than other wedding venues in Colorado’s Front Range and offer it with more inclusions and amenities at a third to half the cost. Mission accomplished!

We opened in April of 2019 and closed due to Covid in 2020. Tough year for Hearth House Venue and for our 62 clients who postponed their weddings. We spent the downtime promoting Hearth House Venue, giving tours, and booking over 100 weddings with couples optimistic about having their COVID-free wedding in 2021. It all worked out and we continue to book an average of 120 Weddings each year.

Hearth House Venue was intentionally designed to be a beautiful blank canvas so our couples can dress it up or dress it down to fit their esthetics. It is somewhat of a chameleon, changing with each wedding or event. Some call it Farmhouse Fresh with a modern twist, others say it has a perfect Colorado Mountain vibe. And many say that it’s the most beautiful barn they have ever seen.

Who doesn’t love hanging around the Hearth and leaning into the warmth of family and friend. Sitting around the fire is certainly one of my favorite things to do, and the huge 25 ft fireplace is one of the main reasons couples book Hearth House Venue. It’s the central focal point inside the Grand Hearth Room and has become the iconic feature on the exterior, making the Mountain View Terrace the favorite place to host cocktail hour or intimate ceremonies. Most ceremonies are actually held outside on the adjacent Colorado Courtyard. The lens loves the Courtyard with the Colorado Mountains as a backdrop. Hearth House Venue is well known for our amazing getting-ready spaces, which are included in the Venue Booking Fee. The Cottage and Lounge are used by the wedding party to relax and prep for the big moment. An additional Family Hospitality space we call, The Family Room is available as well.

Hearth House Venue is pretty flexible, and we offer both Do It Yourself (DIY) and All Inclusive Package (AIP) Planning options. Unlike most Wedding Venues, we are not a “hard no” venue and we love to say, ” Your day, your way!”. While we have policies in place to keep our guests and the venue safe and secure, we love to jump through hoops to give couples exactly what they want. And what most couples want is the All-Inclusive Package! We worked diligently to secure “like hearted” Vendors who genuinely care about our couples and their hopes, dreams, and financial limitations. Because over 95% of our couples now book the All-Inclusive Package, our Vendors are able to offer some amazing rates which makes Hearth House Venue’s All-Inclusive Package much more affordable than other Venues. And we include everything but the photographer: Wedding Coordinator, Catering, Bar, Floral, Dessert, DJ, Linens, Event Insurance, Centerpieces and Greenery. The All-Inclusive Package at Hearth House Venue is like pushing the Easy Button for weddings.

For couples who opt out of the All-Inclusive Option and want to do most of their own planning and vendor selections, we offer a Do It Yourself option, Couples can choose from our vetted Family Favorite Vendors or introduce us to their own for our approval.

Hearth House Venue also offers the popular SIMPLY WED Inclusive Package for couples who just want to get married soon and without the fuss and expense. SIMPLY Wed is a Pop-Up Micro Wedding Package that takes place within 60 days of booking and offers just enough for a perfect intimate celebration for up to 45 people.

While we specialize in Weddings and Receptions, events of all kinds frequent Hearth House Venue, including non-profit banquets, Corporate Events, and Private Parities.

As beautiful as Hearth House Venue is, it’s the people that make the place really special. Everyone truly cares and goes the extra mile to make each Wedding fairy-tail perfect. The professional Team at Hearth House Venue loves to serve and loves hospitality. They are truly the heart of Hearth House Venue.

Our couples become part of the family too when they say I Do at Hearth House Venue. That family feeling starts well before the wedding when our couples attend Two-Step Tuesday and spend the evening with their All-Inclusive Vendors, tasting food and cocktails, picking out flowers and linens and mingling with other couples and all the AIP Vendors. The night is topped off with a dance lesson so they are ready for their first dance. Two-Step Tuesday is quarterly so couples get to spend time together on more than one occasion and lasting friendships are made.

Two-Step Tuesday is just one more thing that makes Hearth House Venue so special.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been obstacles and challenges since opening in 2019. While a challenging and painful time, Covid brought out some of the best in our couples who had to postpone. They were sad, mad, disappointed, yet most of them showed compassion, understanding, and a depth of character that is indiscernible. They were light during a very dark time and I will forever be in awe.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
It took me several years to figure out what really matters most when it comes to Hearth House Venue. There were struggles with staffing and leadership, and greed and conflicting business practices had to be handled. This all went away when I stopped listening to the “experts” who taught business principles that focused on surrounding yourself with “like minded business associate”. It hit me one day at a low point; I need to surround myself with like-hearted people, not like-minded people. There is a huge difference. Now, our team is made up of like-hearted people who give, always. And I do, I mean always. They go the extra mile to make the day special and perfect. It is THE DAY! What matters is that it is flawless and stress-free while exceeding expectations. The Hearth House Venue Team is made up of people with a heart for people. At the end of the day, It’s what matters.
