Exploring Life & Business with Rachel Gayle of City Sweats

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Gayle.

Hi Rachel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In 2018, I met Dee Alams, founder of City Sweats, an Infrared Sauna Studio and Spa in Seattle. At the time, they had two thriving locations and were about to expand to two more through a new franchising prospect. At this point, I had been in the massage therapy and essential oil industries for four years. I was excited about the opportunity to help Dee incorporate high-quality essential oils into her studios, which centered around the benefits of Infrared. I was blown away by the ambiance when I visited one of the locations. It was beautiful, inviting, and genuinely captivating. In trying an Infrared Sauna Service just one time, I was amazed at the tangible difference. Sitting in the complementary Relaxation Room after my service, I felt calm and focused in ways I couldn’t remember feeling before. The experience stayed with me for weeks.

In 2020, right before the pandemic began, my family decided to relocate to Fort Collins, Colorado, to be closer to my mom and sister. We had just welcomed our third child into the family and were tired of doing life so far away from them. As we settled, I told them about my incredible City Sweats experiences. We started dreaming about what it could look like if we opened one in the area. We knew Fort Collins didn’t have anything like it–and we couldn’t wait to support the varied lifestyles within our community. My mom, Tammy, has an extensive background in accounting and business management, as well as great connections. My sister, Rylee, has customer service and managerial experience and an incredible knack for details. Adding in my history in the health and wellness industry and my husband’s connections within unique communities, we knew we had what we needed to make it happen.

Starting a brand new business in the middle of a pandemic has brought its unique share of excitement, both good and bad. We’ve had ups, and we’ve had downs. But the growth this has brought to each of us individually and to our collective relationship has been a game-changer. We opened the first City Sweats location outside of the Seattle area. We offer our Northern Colorado area access to a beautiful space with Infrared Sauna Cabins, Infrared Sauna Wraps, Lymphatic Therapy, Ultrasonic Body Contouring, Massage Therapy, and a gorgeous Relaxation Room. It’s not very often that people get to say they love coming to work. It’s an even greater rarity that they can say they love who they get to work with. We can honestly say both. And we couldn’t be more grateful.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Finding people to support you can be very challenging when attempting something major, like opening a business for the first time. Although we each had experience, we had never attempted anything to this scale. So when we applied for funding, we were denied. When we sought our ideal location, we were turned down. We even had a construction company take advantage of us during our initial build-out, causing us money, time, and a lot of heartaches. But we persevered. We found a select few who believed in us and our business. We acquired funding. We found a location that we adore. We had another construction company come in and help us exponentially.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
City Sweats is an Infrared Sauna Studio and Spa. We take the well-known health benefits of Infrared Technology and marry it with the highly-favored spa environment. When our clients enter our doors, they are welcomed into a calm and soothing healing environment. We ensure everything around them echoes that, from the music selection to the diffuser blends and even the temperature of the lights. We want them to be transported out of their stressful day and into the best parts of themselves. Our clients can expect major cellular detoxification during our services, which often results in reduced pain/inflammation, improved sleep patterns, a boosted immune system, increased metabolism, and much more. And we’re here to support them every step of the way.

What were you like growing up?
My mom, sister and I grew up in La Porte, a small town up towards Lake Michigan in northwest Indiana. Life is quite a bit slower there. But every summer and holiday, we would take a trip to Fort Collins, Colorado to visit with our grandparents, aunts and uncles that lived here. Fifteen years ago my mom and sister relocated to be closer to my grandma. And in 2020, I followed with my family. The three of us have very different personalities. I was always driven and determined. I loved learning and crafting and being a homebody as much as possible. My mom was always the passionate social butterfly. She loved taking us to the beach or a barbecue, and any story she tells can be heard from a mile away. And my sister has always been the caretaker–whether by providing a hug or comedic relief. She always made us laugh as a little girl, and it hasn’t changed at all as she’s gotten older. As we’ve aged, our personalities have meshed together quite a bit. It’s a funny dynamic that happens when the three of us get together, with water, wind and fire signs all represented.
