Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Harris.
Hi Andrea, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started working with dogs as a teenager, handling various breeds in the show ring for different kennel clubs. I began to understand animal behavior and went into dog training. I attended ASU Beebe’s Veterinary Technology program before launching my career in veterinary medicine. I worked in general practices, high-volume spay and neuter clinics, shelter medicine, emergency, and critical care.
In 2018 I traveled to South Africa and taught animal technician students, provided vaccine outreach in local villages, and fulfilled lifelong goals surrounded by my mentors, students, and friends in Mahifkeng. I came home in August 2018 and found the hemp industry was beginning to flourish in Arkansas. I was curious and concerned for my veterinary patients as products geared to animals flooded the market. I asked my colleagues about how to approach CBD, what products were best, how we dose it, etc. No one could answer me and they avoided the topic.
I completed the Veterinary Cannabis Counselor course based out of Denver, Colorado. I formulated my products during the course and I used my treats for the 6 independent case studies required to complete the program. My dog treats took off. Each piece is made by hand with all-natural ingredients. I shipped them off in zip lock bags and a matter of a few months, I was quitting my job to keep up with production.
They were easing achy joints, making old dogs play like puppies again, stopping household destruction from separation anxiety cases, and stopping seizures. I was blown away! Then our clients reported allergy relief, improved quality of life for cancer patients, and more. Hippie Hounds was here to stay and we were growing quicker than I could hold on. I became an international master speaker, emphasizing on veterinary cannabis, woman empowerment, & mindfulness.
I’m a certified instructor with the American Association of Veterinary State Boards. I’m also the learning program manager for Veterinary Cannabis Education & Referral Services. I’m also the owner, founder, and CEO of Hippie Hounds. As of Jan 2022, Hippie Hounds is available in over 80 retail locations spanning 8 states. We’re sold in veterinary clinics, cannabis dispensaries, grooming salons, pet resorts, pet stores, and more.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Of course, it hasn’t been a smooth road! I was met with resistance from my colleagues in the veterinary industry. It became my mission to change minds with my product because I never anticipated such hostility for cannabis within the medical field. It was also a challenge elevating from vet tech to CEO. I dealt with a lot of imposter syndrome and felt like I was out of my element. Once I gained some strong mentors I was able to see my worth.
