Hidden Gems: Meet Angel Johnson of ICONI

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Johnson.  

Hi Angel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was on a renewed fitness journey and feeling comfortable in the gym was a hurdle that I had to overcome. One of the things that made me feel comfortable in the gym was supportive, comfortable, and fashionable activewear. However, some of the activewear that I wore made me feel the exact opposite. One day when I was working out, one of my friends told me that my leggings were see-through. I was horrified because that meant everyone else could also see through them when I was squatting and I was angry because I spent so much on these leggings just for them to be see-through. Fast forward a couple of weeks in September 2019, while working a long nightshift, the idea of starting my own activewear line with squat-proof leggings came to me. ICONI officially launched our first three clothing items in January 2020. Since then, we have launched over eight collections and now offer sports bras, leggings, tops, socks, and shorts to our customers. 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Some of the struggles I had along the way were finding the right manufacturing, finding the best route to import goods, finding the best delivery carrier, and so much more. One of the roughest moments for me, was when was a delivery carrier, who lost four boxes of leggings right before Black Friday/Cyber Monday in 2020. 

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
ICONI stands for “I Can Overcome, Nothing’s Impossible.” We want to remind everyone that no matter the obstacle, they can overcome it. Our mission is to change the world one legging at a time by motivating people through our high-quality activewear and providing an inclusive environment for everyone while giving back to those in need and in crisis and remembering our humble beginnings. Our logo represents power, strength, and versatility. The base of our logo is a power button which represents the power to accomplish your goals. The overlay is the Adrinka symbol for strength and versatility. It takes all these elements to control your total wellness, especially when starting a fitness journey. 

We specialize in squat proof, motivational, and inclusive activewear. What sets ICONI apart is our activewear is motivational and we have a motivational community; our activewear is inclusive, we carry sizes S-4XL and feature people of all backgrounds on our website and social pages; and we give back 10% of our profits to nonprofit organizations such as Clothes to Kids of Denver, My Sister’s House, and Girls on the Run Rockies. 

I am most proud brand-wise that we were able to produce our first full collection, The Back-to-Basics Collections (36 pieces), in S-4XL. I was finally able to be more inclusive and ensure everyone knows ICONI is for them. 

I want the readers to know that ICONI has supportive, squat proof, moisture-wicking, and comfortable activewear for women and men and we built every piece with you in mind. 

What was you like growing up?
Growing up, my granny (grandma) would always say that I’m an “old soul.” Meaning that she thought I had a maturity and understanding and care for other people that was beyond my age. 

I always had big visions of where I wanted my life to be when I was growing up. I learned my work ethic and determination from seeing my mother work three jobs to take care of my brother and me. 

Growing up, I was always extremely busy with activities such as competitive cheerleading, ballet, karate, band, and reading. My mom’s goals were to keep me productive and goal-oriented.
