Hidden Gems: Meet Cabal Yarne of Decade

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cabal Yarne.

Hi Cabal, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story as a business owner started with a shopping outing with my mom in 8th grade. I picked out some new clothes and then sported my new attire at school the next week. My teacher complimented me on my outfit, and ever since that moment, I have had a love for clothing and the retail world and aspired to own my own store. It’s funny to look back on that day and realize that a red air Jordan T, some white Nikes, and a pair of wool pants started my passion for what would be a future career. I studied Business Administration and Apparel Design in college, then interned for Limited Brands at their headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. After that, I decided to head to the mountains and managed multiple retail stores in Vail, Beaver Creek, Snowmass, and Aspen. I opened my first boutique in Vail in 2007, and then a second location in Keystone in 2013. I moved to Denver in 2014 and purchased Decade in 2015, which was originally started by the previous owner in 1998. Decade has been an amazing experience. Hunting for vintage finds and bringing old items back to life is so rewarding, and helping people find the perfect outfit, gift, or piece of furniture is something that makes me happy daily.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing worth doing is ever easy. As an owner, I have struggled with all sorts of issues such as theft, employee health problems, deaths, lease negotiations, and the ups and downs of cashflow cycles. Many things have impacted my business in one way or another, but at the end of the day, the positives always outweigh the negatives. I love what I do. I am in the people business, and sometimes people can be tough, but most times they are amazing.

We’ve been impressed with Decade, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Decade really is a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. Decade Gifts in Denver opened in March of 1998 to offer timeless accessories with value pricing in mind. We have maintained the eclectic and ever-changing feel in our 3,600 square foot store on South Broadway in Denver’s Baker neighborhood by constantly rotating in new merchandise while keeping the top sellers in stock year after year. We sell men’s and women’s contemporary clothing, vintage and antique furniture, home accessories, jewelry, baby, gifts, cards, and more.

What sets Decade apart is our abundance of gifts for all occasions. We feature artful and bright displays of gifts for everyone. The bike lovers, bartenders, coffee connoisseurs, unicorn obsessed, and even world travelers will all be surprised with what’s hidden in every nook and cranny at Decade Gifts.

We carry a diverse mix of local favorites and new finds. Most of our upcycled display furniture is for sale and adds to the charm of our store. We have big comfy changing rooms and a friendly staff too!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Credit can be good, but credit can also be very bad. In business, buying merchandise and starting businesses on credit is how things get done quickly and you can get ahead, but having debt when a crisis happens can put you in a bad spot quickly. Lesson 1 learned from COVID: avoid debt at all costs. Lesson 2: enjoy the people you work with. When times get tough you want to be surrounded by a team that supports you, and when times are good you will want to celebrate with a team you believe in. A good crew of co-workers is essential. Lesson 3: have the tough conversations. People are understanding and sleep is easier with a clean conscience. Lesson 4: you can’t fix everything and you need to be adaptable.
