Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelcie Ottoes.
Hi Kelcie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a writer, but outside of books, I wasn’t sure how someone could be paid to write for a living. And the publishing industry is incredibly hard to break into. One day in my mid-twenties I learned about copywriting and was super interested, but I couldn’t figure out how to make ends meet at 2 cents/word.
Two years later, I bumped into an old college friend who told me she had become a copywriter and was loving it. I asked her how she figured it out, and she sent me a course she took. I was hooked. Learning about the different types of copywriting made me feel like I had 100 opportunities to write for folks. I quickly decided on a niche in sustainability and have never looked back since.
Now, I run a business called Kelcie Ottoes Copywriting, where I help sustainable B2B organizations tell their stories better. Whether we’re increasing reach with SEO blog posts, improving authority with case studies, or driving conversions with white papers, I love writing for people who are saving our planet. There are lots of folks out there doing amazing work, and I’m grateful to be able to amplify their mission.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a new business is always a little challenging, but I think in a question like this, it’s important to mention my privileges. I have an incredibly supportive network always willing to champion my success. I’m married, and my husband was happy to support me financially while I got things up and running. I was able to move slowly and take chances others might not be able to, which is why I feel like my road was smooth.
Not because the road is smooth, but because a handful of privileges helped me get to where I am faster. I am incredibly grateful to my network, family and husband for helping me make this dream a reality. That said, if you’re reading this and thinking copywriting is for you, lots of folks have made it work without any of my privileges. Don’t be afraid to go for it!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business is special because I only support folks who are making the planet a safer, cleaner, more sustainable place. When I started copywriting, I knew it was important to be selective with who I worked with. Otherwise, at the end of this road, I felt I might not be proud of the work I had done/created.
I work with B2B organizations focused on sustainability to help them tell their stories better. Most people don’t know this, but the average reading level for Americans is a 5th-grade reading level. The science community is greatly disconnected from the general population, in part, because of how inaccessible the information can be sometimes. The more accessible the information, the more memorable the story, the more likely the impact.
I help increase reach and website traffic with strategic SEO blog posts. I create case studies that improve authority, brand reputation, and trust. I write white papers that nurture folks through the client funnel and increase conversions. By owning the entire content marketing funnel, I’m able to help brands increase their funnel traffic and conversions with consistent messaging and helpful information their ideal clients are looking for.
I’m most proud of the folks I support. They’re all doing amazing things, and I’m so grateful to use my super power (writing) to combat climate change and be a part of the revolution.
Any big plans?
I love writing white papers. They’re a little hard to break into, and I think a lot of copywriters would be interested in writing more of them. So I’m hoping to launch a course, coaching program, and client acquisition sprint to help other copywriters land and write white papers.
