Hidden Gems: Meet Peter Stuart of Sterling Builders

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Stuart. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Peter Stuart was born and raised in Maine. At a young age, Peter began building things alongside his family and friends. He started building barns, boats, bird feeders, and furniture. At the age of 15, he began working for a painting company that taught him the fundamentals of work processes and the art of efficiency throughout a job. After high school, Peter moved to Colorado to attend college at the University of Denver. He started college with the focus of mechanical engineering, but after a few years, he realized he wanted to do more by entering a hands-on field Mid-college, he started his business doing interior remodels, which has grown into Sterling Builders, a full-service construction and development company.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being from the East Coast, Peter grew up working on 200+ years old buildings that required a high level of craftsmanship to complete. Work, and life, in Colorado has a much faster pace, and maintaining this level of detail and care has made it a difficult task to keep up with the speed required to succeed in this rapid market. Another challenge Peter has dealt with is finding people who are dedicated, skilled, and excited to build high-performance Passive House buildings. Generally, people are excited about Passive House building, but they lack in skills (patience, focus, thoroughness) that are necessary to build a successful Passive House building. “It’s a unique group of people that have both desire and required skillset for this specific field of building.”

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sterling Builders?
Peter Stuart has molded his company, Sterling Builders, to be a construction company that specializes in custom, high-performance buildings. Sterling Builders is a small team of elite craftsmen who have placed themselves at the leading edge of construction innovation through the use of high-performance building techniques and premium products. Peter Stuart and his team believe that home building and the art of craftsmanship should constantly be advancing. For the last several years, Sterling Builders main focus has transitioned towards the Passive House Building standard. Peter and his team are currently immersed in the building and development of Colorado’s first multi-family Passive House in Englewood, CO. Peter is a Certified Passive House Builder. Their mission is to continue building Passive Houses in Colorado and supporting the building industries transition as this becomes the new standard over the next decades.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Peter has received priceless suggestions and advice from a few people in the building development community. Some have given him recommendations involving business structure and where to pick your battles in terms of what’s important and what is not. One developer implied: build homes that are prettier behind the walls than what is on the surface of the walls, which is different than what most builders and developers say today. The key is to stand out as different. Peter has also learned several things from his parents. “My Mom has been a science teacher for 30 years and has always taught me to address problems and find innovative solutions through trial and error. This mindset has driven me to question building techniques and systems and look for solutions that either need to be figured out or have already been solved and have just yet to become mainstream. My Dad has always had the stance of being able to fix things yourself. While he is a master of nothing when it comes to working on buildings, he always encouraged me to roll up my sleeves and give it a try if there is something I wanted to learn. My desire to be self-taught and figure out solutions on my own has come from my Dad. This has helped me grow a business that does not follow down the same path the building industry has been on for the last 60 years.”
