Hidden Gems: Meet Shana Troyer of Mindful Leadership

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shana Troyer.

Hi Shana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have almost 2 decades of human resources experience. I’ve done everything from recruiting to employee relations to organizational development to leadership coaching. Human Resources is stressful. People typically do not come to us because they love their jobs or their managers. I often teased that HR was the “trash can” of the organization. Don’t get me wrong, I love the profession. But over the last few years, I’ve really been trying to pinpoint what I love the most and how can I turn that into what I do every day.

I have always been incredibly passionate about leadership coaching since I started my career. Leaders have a huge responsibility both to their company and to their employees. If you look at an organization’s culture, you can typically determine the type of leader that is leading. Leaders are responsible for their organizations culture and the morale of their workgroup. So often, I saw people promoted into leadership roles because they were great technically and great at getting results. Often times they weren’t so great at leading people.

Leading people is hard. One size doesn’t fit all. What works well for Employee A doesn’t always work well for Employee B. And times are changing, we can’t expect employees to work they way our parents did or even the way we did. What employees need and want from an organization has changed. As leaders, we have to figure out a way to provide an atmosphere where people want to come to work and do their best. We can no longer say “we provide them a paycheck so that’s motivation enough”

Seeing this need over and over again is what has inspired me to become a Leadership Coach. Being a leader can be lonely. We often get in our own way. Our doubts start to creep in. We feel stuck. That’s where I come in. I help leaders get unstuck from their challenges and help them transfer their learning into results. Leaders are smart, sometimes they just need a thought partner to help them see things from a different lens. I especially love working with those who are new in their leadership role or who are struggling and think that maybe being a leader isn’t for them.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I am brand new in my business. Right now, the struggle is finding clients and just getting my name out. Working for yourself, you have to be disciplined, you have to be motivated, you have to give yourself your own pep talks.

We’ve been impressed with Mindful Leadership, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I help new and struggling leaders get unstuck from their dilemmas and assist them in transferring their learning into results for their organization, creating deep and profound changes.

Clients come to me when the following starts happening…

➡️ They are brand new to the leadership role and are struggling moving from a peer to a boss

➡️ Have been in their leadership role for a while but are struggling with employee retention, culture, and meeting business objectives

➡️ They’re great at results but struggling knowing how to lead their employees

All in all, they’re just overwhelmed and tired and don’t know how to make an impact with their employees

I coach Leaders become more successful in their roles. I help them learn strategies to be inspirational leaders that employees are excited to work for. I am their thought partner/sounding board helping them identify the blocks that keep them stuck and identify strategies to move them forward. I help them reach their full potential and prepare them for their next role.

Sometimes we need time and space to talk with a non-judgmental thought partner. Someone who can help you remember the awesome leader you are or you can be.

I am a highly accomplished Leadership Coach with nearly two decades of leadership coaching. I have a passion for working with Leaders who are on the front line. I’ve worked with these leaders for years, helping them unlock their potential getting them to the next level of their career. I am an authentic and tenacious business partner recognized for leading with a strong operational background, with the ability to influence, partner, and negotiate within all levels of an organization. I have a strong commitment to mentoring, coaching, and promoting collaboration and development of new approaches that are built on credibility, creativity, ethics, and knowledge.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Interesting question that I’ve never really thought about. I guess I’m not sure if I believe in luck. I do believe that everything happens for a reason–good or bad. I have taken what some may consider bad luck and have tried to ask “what is this teaching me, how can I grow, what can I take away from that” and then shifted based on that. I’ve worked incredibly hard for everything I have in my life and so I’m not sure I would consider that good luck.
