Inspiring Conversations with Elissa Tompkins of BlackPaw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elissa Tompkins.

Hi Elissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Both my husband and I have always had a passion for animals and I have spent many years working with rescues for donation drives, fostering, adoption assistance, and more. I was looking for a way to continue to work with animals in a professional capacity and provide opportunities to help shelters and rescues around us.

We ended up connecting with the previous owners of BlackPaw in a serendipitous way and our needs aligned so well, we couldn’t pass up the amazing opportunity. I now operate BlackPaw personally, alongside the same amazing, helpful and knowledgeable staff and get to help the amazing pets of Boulder County.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Covid-19 was a difficult time for everyone, and throughout it, we were adjusting our policies to keep customers and staff safe. We weren’t able to do many events for the community during the pandemic and we found alternative ways to help out. We have an amazing and dedicated staff who make the struggles a little easier and we got through it all together.

We’ve been impressed with BlackPaw, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Locally owned and operated small business, serving the Boulder County area since 2006. Our number one priority is your pet. We offer premium foods and treats, sustainable and safe toys, a full-service self-service dog wash, and mindful and patient dog grooming. Our groomers are ultra-experienced, love animals, and take the time to make each dog feel at ease.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite memory was probably the day when I got my first dog. My dad had already said no to dogs because he wasn’t a huge fan of the animal at the time. My friend’s rescue dog had puppies and I fell in love with a little red-colored Dashound mix. I ran home and asked my dad to give it a chance, and to my surprise, he did. When I brought that puppy home, my dad fell in love with her. They developed an amazing bond together and it was so wonderful to see my big, protective dad who insisted he didn’t like dogs, fall for a sweet pup.
