Inspiring Conversations with Kate Franks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Franks.

Hi Kate, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Travel has been a passion of mine as long as I can remember…

20 years ago, I got my AAS in Travel and Business Management in Fargo, ND in hopes of becoming a Travel Agent. It was because of annual family trips to Minneapolis, MN as a child that I fell in love with Embassy Suites and traveling. Glamorous, right? But it was a job at a local hotel got me interested in all the different areas one could work in at a hotel and I gravitated to hotel sales and events instead of working at a travel agency. Fast forward 17 years later, after leaving the best hotel I ever worked at (this was due to ownership changes and a very UN-desirable workplace that came with that), I decided to work for HelmsBriscoe a global meeting sourcing company. I did this and was successful at building up my own clients and assisting an already successful local Regional Director with her book of business. But just as I was ramping up – Covid. I didn’t work for six months and was on LinkedIn EVERY. DAY. Waiting, watching, seeing what opportunities were out there. But nothing felt right. I couldn’t sit around and wait for something, so I started talking to friends and one of my best girls recommended I reach out to a local travel agent via FB that we mutually knew and that was from my hometown of Bismarck, ND. This person never got back to me, but through a good ol’ fashion Facebook rabbit hole, I found someone else, who I am now an IC (Independent Consultant) with and I have found what I was meant to do- plan travel logistics and curate amazing memories for my clients.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Covid dealt us in the hospitality industry a nasty card and we have all been trying to build up business for the last 2 years. The last two years, we have spent time and energy reassuring clients it’s ok to travel again and being honest with them if we felt it wasn’t right. We worked around the clock to make sure people were getting refunds or credits, making sure documentation was up to date, and making sure we were communicating with our vendors and suppliers to make sure we were up to date on all the changes and protocols taking place. Our jobs were so much more than travel agents or meeting planners – we became friends, confidants, and most importantly ADVISORS.

With 20 years of industry experience in hotel group sales, I have most enjoyed time spent in convention and boutique hotels in Minneapolis, including time with brands like Hilton, Millennium, Kimpton, and Hyatt. I have worked with a wide variety of clients, including professional athletes, health care organizations, tour managers for live entertainment, educational institutions, manufacturing companies, and law firms. I also have experience working on large citywide conventions, including the 2014 MLB All-Star Game, Super Bowl 2018, and NCAA 2019. From 2019 to 2022, I also sourced meetings and managed room blocks and events for board meetings, incentive reward trips, conferences, and conventions and continue to do so through my travel agency.

My passion lies in building fun, reliable, long-lasting relationships with my clients. Bringing people together to share experiences drives me and I truly love what I do. The travel industry has introduced me to people from around the world and I love the way travel allows us to experience different cultures and forces us outside our comfort zones at times.   • $40 per person for Domestic Vacations
  • $40 per person for Caribbean, Mexico, Central America Vacations
  • $125.00 per Honeymoon/couple
  • $250.00 for 2 people/2 weeks in Europe. Additional countries/weeks/people are $50 each.
