Inspiring Conversations with Lisa Spurgeon of Spurgeon Enterprises

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Spurgeon.

Hi Lisa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Whether raising alpacas, enjoying my family, or helping individuals and teams improve personally and professionally, I am blessed to get to live a life I truly LOVE by investing in and building up others!

I have had a passion for creating value for others for as long as I can remember. Growing up, one of the things I did for fun was find ways to build little businesses – lemonade stands, selling wrapping paper and candy door to door, creating flyers to advertise my babysitting skills at age 9, etc. As I got a little older and participated in sports and groups in high school and college, I became interested in learning to lead and invest in others as well as myself.

Those two passions have fueled my career and led me to where I am today. I run a consulting business – Spurgeon Enterprises – where my aim is to help individuals and teams improve their success and enjoyment in life. I am also a Regional Manager at Genesis Health Clubs and I get to both delve into leadership development and use my entrepreneurial mindset to help myself and my teams consistently succeed. My success in both those endeavors have given me the ability to build a life I absolutely LOVE – my husband and I run an Alpaca Ranch in Northern Colorado and have a ten months old baby boy!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have absolutely been bumps in the road. Leadership is a lifelong journey that requires constant investment of time, energy, and heart and is rarely boring or smooth. Some of the major areas of growth for me have been figuring out how to set and achieve goals, how to communicate in a way that inspires action, and how to hold myself and others accountable. It is difficult to balance my health, my family, my businesses, and my career, so I seek continual improvement by focusing on those same three skill sets (clear goals, effective communication, and kind accountability), in all areas of my life.

I believe that my best self enjoys all parts of life and is obsessed with my own definition of success – no one else’s. I have found when I take the time to get clear about who I want to be and what I want to accomplish in my entire life as a whole, and I also make it a practice to remind myself daily who that is and what that looks like, I move toward my best life almost unconsciously and with great joy!

If you’re like me, when you see a quote about the benefits of a morning routine or read an article about the value of leading engaging meetings or the importance of trust in teams, you want to know HOW to implement the concept and get results that make life better! Usually, the problem isn’t agreeing with the idea, it’s knowing how to apply it so life actually improves. (What exactly do you need to do? When? In what order? What questions do you need to answer? What steps do you need to take?)

I specialize in transforming ideas and concepts into easy-to-follow action plans. The goal is simple – get life/work changing for the better – fast! For my consulting clients, I create custom plans and pathways to success based on the specific challenges we agree are most important to overcome. For my website and social media community, I build step-by-step action guides based on proven frameworks and relevant research that explain how to actually apply some of the most effective techniques for developing and improving leadership skills, team effectiveness, and individual improvement!

I also explore various theories, concepts, and research in blog posts to share with others for free. I implement my action plans in my own life and leadership first and am constantly improving systems and action plans as I learn and grow. Sharing what I’ve learned from experience and creating custom plans for companies to succeed helps others improve their lives, and I am grateful for the opportunity to make the world we all live in better every day!

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Oh man – this could be a really long list! I believe to grow and improve and really enjoy my life, learning from others is imperative. Investing time in books, videos, podcasts, blogs, and in hearing from the people I interact with is absolutely essential. The growth and success I have experienced in my own life would not be possible without the learning I have found in books and articles, in addition to the school of hard knocks.
