Today we’d like to introduce you to Missy Seigle.
Hi Missy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I often joke that I wish I could go back to college knowing what I know now to have a do-over.
All the hype about “the best four years of your life” wasn’t even CLOSE to my experience. Instead, I spent most of college drowning in anxiety, overwhelm and comparison. I was more worried about fitting in, achieving high grades, and keeping up with my social life than taking a step back to see if how I was living was working for me (hint, it wasn’t!)
Living out of alignment like this manifested in sleeplessness, unhealthy exercise and eating patterns, anxiety attacks, crying spells, feeling out of place/different and a deep longing for home. It seemed like everyone around me had it all figured out and I had missed the meeting about “how to college!”
Fast forward to almost 20 years later, not only have I walked my own path to healing and fulfillment, but as an experienced mental health clinician specializing in adolescents and young adults, I’ve helped hundreds of clients find their own way through anxiety, overthinking and overwhelm. I know now what I was missing!
I know how to check in with myself, what matters to me, and how to show up for and take care of me from a place that is grounded and empowered—rather than rooted in harsh judgment and “not enoughness.”
With nearly 15 of experience as a clinical therapist, I’ve worked with clients of all backgrounds, ages and walks of life. I noticed a particular client started showing up in my practice all the time — COLLEGE STUDENTS–especially college women!
These clients felt a pull toward my practice, the space I held for them, and the insight I offered. Why? They were feeling all the things I had felt. They were looking for the support I had searched for. And over the past few years, especially with a global pandemic thrown in, the need for mental health support is greater than ever. It can be hard to find the right support, especially as a college student.
AND I had more to offer them — a different, deeper lens that wasn’t just based in meditation apps, journaling and trying to “let it go.”
Hey Missy was born out of a desire to connect with and serve on a broader scale college students and young women who are in that potentially crazy-making stage of “emerging adulthood.”
My clients are trying to figure out what matters, what’s important, how to have your own back, how you show up for yourself, and then for those around you. I took the long road to figuring this stuff out, but with my experience as a therapist, mental health advocate, feminist, and coach, it’s my true honor to show the “short cuts” to believing in yourself to my amazing clients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a mental health therapist, the need for services has so far surpassed the providers available. With an overflowing private practice that was receiving more and more referrals each day, It became so clear that I needed to reinvent the delivery of some of my services to create more accessible, flexible options that would be well suited for college and college-age students. Starting every business is a bit of a roller coaster, but my interest, passion and the need for these services have kept me inspired along the way! Figuring out how to connect with the people that need this, as well as manage the tech stuff was a learning curve at first, but as the project has gained momentum the motivation and energy grows!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Hey Missy LLC?
Hey Missy is a coaching business for college students. I specialize in supporting college students in the emotional skill set they need as young adults–the stuff that makes life so much simpler, but that no one ever taught us! We spend SO much time preparing academically for college, and almost zero of that is focused on our emotional wellbeing and health. I figured this stuff out the hard way, but it’s my mission to offer shortcuts to my clients. I offer a “College Transition Course” — helping with the emotional transition to college and serving as support outside of parents and friends for that new stage of life. I also work in the realm of anxiety with “Anxiety Alchemy” a 7-week course aimed for college women struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, comparison and overthinking. My courses cover mindsets, skillsets, identity work, motivation tools, self-awareness and understanding, communication skills and MUCH MORE. There is weekly group coaching where my clients get to check in with me, and I also offer Voxxer (a walkie-talkie app) support where can basically have me in your back pocket for support. I have not seen anyone target mental health for college students in this way–quick wins, flexible, accessible and from someone who GETS it and has been creating these resources from 15 years of being a therapist. It’s powerful stuff!
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
OH my gosh! The online coaching industry is exploding right now and there are so many amazing things happening. The pandemic really challenges our notion of the “sit and get” in the chair therapy experience and both clients and clinicians are so much more open to online offerings. The outcome of this work, when done right with someone with the credentials to back it up, is really amazing. It’s so awesome to think creatively about how different services and support can look through a hybrid of prerecorded content, live coaching, and voxxer support. I am so excited to watch this industry change and grow, the pace is definitely fast, but the innovations are amazing and it’s been so fun to learn about and be a part of.
