Life and Work with Abby Schissler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Schissler.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Abby. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My husband and I’s journey began at CSU where we met and fell in love! After graduation, we moved to Denver and pursued our careers and passions. We had a lot of fun living the city life, and then eventually the small town outdoorsy life in Golden. But after about eight years we felt the mountains calling!

Shortly after we got married in 2011- the search began! We were determined to find a retreat venue in the mountains in which we could use as a platform to do good. We searched high and low, looking at everything from dude ranches to campgrounds. After about 3 ½ years, we finally came across the Bella Vista- truly an answer to prayers!!! It is even greater than everything we had hoped or imagined.

With my experience in event planning and my husband’s experience with painting and property management, it was a match made in heaven! We are fully equipped to make Bella Vista greater each day and have vision for it be one of the most sought after retreat destinations in all of Colorado.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We thought it was going to be a smooth road because we knew it was an answer to prayers. And answered prayers are always easy, right? Haha – no! As soon as we moved up to Steamboat and took over operations, everything started breaking down- including ourselves! I swear there was a $10,000 fix that came up each month- broilers going out, electricity fixes, you name it!

Aside from financial struggles, I think the biggest struggle that I didn’t foresee ahead of time was how hard it was going to be moving to a new town where we didn’t know anyone. I am very social and outgoing so the thought of being alone hadn’t crossed my mind until we were up there. I just remember being on top of the mountain, living at Bella Vista Estate, and thinking “if something were to happen to us, we wouldn’t even have anyone to call in town for help!” That was a very isolating and lonely feeling. Things were different with having the responsibility of overseeing a business. Also, our daughter (1st child) was only six months old when we moved up to Steamboat. It’s much harder to get out and socialize when you are a new mom.

My advice for women who are just starting their journey is to be realistic with what the different seasons are going to look like. It is not all going to be butterflies and rainbows once you are doing your own thing and working for yourself. You are going to have to work 10x harder than you ever have before but in the hopes that a few years of hard work will pay off in the end.

Please tell us about Bella Vista Estate.
The Bella Vista Estate is truly a dream come true. It is a vacation home in Steamboat Springs that has one of the most beautiful views in all of Colorado. We accommodate only one group at a time, making for a completely private retreat for you and yours. We believe in the power of connection and spending quality time with those who matter most.

The Estate is the type of place you retreat to and forget about all the worries of your world. It’s a place where you can melt away into the current moment and making memories with those you are choosing to share the space and time with.

What I am most proud of as an organization is the care and love that we put into the property. We work so hard to set the stage in order for our guests to have the best possible experience. You can feel the family vibe behind the operations and that we truly do care.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I still would really like to find a mentor…

Moving to the small town of Steamboat and trying to network for Bella Vista had me really intimidated at first. I felt that I needed to represent the brand and so it felt stiff and lifeless. When I finally let that go and showed up as myself, Abby Schissler, all of the weight melted away. I believe in authenticity and the true person that I am would have no negative bearing on the brand. We don’t want any guests that don’t align with who we are and our mission anyways!
