Life and Work with Emily Klipp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Klipp.

Emily, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I made my footprint in retail in 2010 as an event and marketing intern, and it opened my eyes to the small business resurgence. I fell in love with marketing, product stories, and the customers that were so monumental in helping build up those brands. I immersed myself in customer relations, buying, and store merchandising and steadily grew my expertise within the space for the next five years.

I made my debut into social media in 2014, when buying a product from a Facebook post produced more reach and sales than an e-commerce site. And when the opportunity to take over posting for all our social media platforms presented itself, I couldn’t turn it down. I spent countless hours traveling from store to store with my white piece of paper background and iPhone 4. I filled that phone up with more photos than I could count and posted 35 times a week to hit our sales goals. Yes, you read that correctly–35 TIMES A WEEK. Five posts a day allowed us to release merchandise hourly to our 30,000 followers. We ran though orders quicker then we could keep inventory in stock. Man, I miss that old algorithm.

After my stint in retail, I moved over to the food and beverage world executing social media marketing for Caribou Coffee. I learned how to develop a brand’s story, successfully implement product launches, and how to introduce a national brand into the digital marketing realm.

I came on board at McLernon & Co. in 2017. Amanda and I had known each other for over a decade, and when she needed some help with the abundance of client work, I stepped in and began to work with her on strategy. From there, our relationship grew naturally, and by October 2017 I was made a partner in the business.

Now, I focus my time on coaching and managing our current team of seven as the business rapidly expands. I head up the client and retention side of the company ensuring that all social media packages are fulfilled, our clients receive the best customer experience and we’re delivering on results. On the team, I’m best known for my internal and client processes and people skills. I love nurturing personal and professional relationships with our team members and creating the processes that come along with building a growing business.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road. For me, at the beginning of my career, I still questioned whether I was living up to my full potential and if I followed the unconventional road of social media, would that be enough? I started my college career as a global study major and transitioned to sociology, so realistically I saw myself in the non-profit or government sector. Finding my place in retail, marketing, and social media made me question, is this the right path for me? Am I doing enough to help others? And over the years, through the customers, clients, and entrepreneurs that I’ve met along the way, I am convinced that the answer is YES. Trust the process and your journey will unfold.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources that help you do your best in life (at work or otherwise)?
I’m incredibly inquisitive, and both Amanda & I are continuously working to push our own education, by reading, listening to podcasts and attending Denver events. My two must have business books are “Good to Great” and “Traction.” Both have been imperative to our business model and successful growth pattern. On a more personal level, I’m a big believer in self-manifestation so I like to immerse myself in self-help books like, “You Are A Badass”, “The Universe Has Your Back” and “The Subtle Art of Not Giving A Fuck.”

My must-listen-to podcast list includes, “Masters of Scale” with Reid Hoffman, “How I Built This” with Guy Raz, and “Rise” with Rachel Hollis.

And as for iPhone apps, I could go on FOREVER in this category with social media being my schtick, but my must-haves are Facebook and Instagram (obvious, I know), Slack for team communication, Calm for meditation, and Yelp for where I’m getting my next happy hour drink.
