Life and Work with Emma Walker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Walker.

Emma, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started blogging five years ago when I was in high school. The reason I started my blog is that I needed a creative outlet – in all honesty, I didn’t have many friends and wanted to keep busy the summer With A City Dream was born. I began by taking pictures in front of my parent’s garage with my tripod (actually I still use my tripod haha!). I LOVED following fashion blogs back then when there was no Instagram and I thought – I can do that too! It was so much fun to find my outfits and share “looks.” Fast forward to now and Instagram is definitely booming and taking over the blog side of my business, but both are equally fun. I also now have really opened up and spoken honestly about my struggles with mental health, wellness and just being a young woman trying to navigate life!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a walk in the part that is for sure. I honestly don’t like to give too much advice about starting or running an influencer business because I think if you are just being yourself people will love you and choose to follow you! The best advice I can feel like I can offer is on confidence. Someone once told me that “you haven’t ruined your life yet, so trust that you aren’t going to start now.” I love that quote because it came at a time when I had a lot of anxiety about my blog, my life, and just everything. I really needed to hear that I could trust myself and that I was looking out for myself. I also needed to learn to love myself because if I truly loved myself that I would continue to make the best choices for myself!

Please tell us about With A City Dream.
I am known for being an influencer – which is still a funny word to me, but I provide people a space to find an outfit, home and just life inspiration that they can easily shop. It is a great way to make money as a student and an even better way to connect with people online. I am most proud that even over the many years of blogging I have stayed true to myself and let people in on all my vulnerabilities. Sometimes, the internet can be a scary place full of filters and edited lives, but if within that I can provide a glimpse into real life I feel accomplished!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I love podcasts right now and my favorite for inspiration is How I Built This and Oprah’s Master Class.
