Life and Work with Gretchen Lamberson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gretchen Lamberson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Gretchen. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After a career in Human Resources that started with Walt Disney World and ended at MillerCoors, I decided to follow my passion and start my own travel agency. I have been an independent travel agent since 2012 and I truly love what I do!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been relatively soon because I love the work. I think I had always known that this was the job for me but people told me that there was no money in it, travel agents are not needed nowadays with the internet, I wouldn’t earn what I did in corporate work (of course) etc. It also starts slow. I remember the first few paychecks being quite small – but I kept focused and then the business grew from referrals and happy repeat customers.

I would tell other women to listen to the voices inside you – often what they are saying is the “true you”. By the way, the travel agency world is THRIVING – clients realize the value that we can provide as an advisor and planner for their travel needs.

Please tell us about Vacations By Gretchen.
I help time-starved families, couples and friends plan amazing vacations. I can assist with any type of travel but I love working with groups – destination weddings, groups of friends. Over the years, I have helped entire family trees travel – as well as everyone in office setting/department. It is so fun to hear that when someone is talking about struggles with planning a trip – my clients jump in and say “contact Gretchen”.

It brings me so much joy when clients come back to me again and again – and refer their friends, co-workers, and family. I love watching them grow – for example, helping a honeymoon couple plan their dream getaway – then a few years later helping them take their toddler to Disneyland.

Clients tell me that I make their travel planning easy so that they can relax – knowing that I’m taking care of the details. They also appreciate that they can contact me at any time with any question or need – Expedia does not answer the phone at 2 am! I often can provide them better pricing and amenities for their trip- but the thing that sets me apart I think is service. All those years being a Disney Cast Member allowed me to learn the value of taking care of clients!

Who have you been inspired by?
I feel fortunate to be part of several groups of friends – all with unique stories and visions for their lives. For example, I have known the mentoring group for over 20 years and it’s a place that we can share everything going on with unconditional love and support. I’m inspired by this group’s strength when faced with life’s challenges and it inspires me to be my best. I think that it is so important for women to have a place to connect – with one woman or a group.

I’ve also had some amazing women leaders in my corporate career who believed in me when I doubted my abilities.
