Life and Work with Kamy Auker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamy Auker.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hi! I grew up in a small town in NW Kansas. My mom did hair and had a small salon in our home. I was rolling perms on my mom’s mannequins at the age of eight… just for fun. I didn’t know I wanted to do hair until my senior year of high school. My original plan was to go to massage school. The school wanted to go to wasn’t federally funded so I decided to go to beauty school. Turns out I had a knack for it. I moved to Colorado summer of 2002 and started beauty school. After I graduated in 2003, I worked at a Great Clips knowing I needed to get some cutting experience under my belt. After a year of that, I was ready to move on. I started working at Trios AVEDA salon and spa in 2004. I went through their advanced training program and went to numerous classes at the Aveda Academy in Denver to sharpen my skills. I owe a lot of my success to the owners Joe and Karen and my trainers Steph and Leah. They helped me blossom into the stylist I am today!

In 2007, I said goodbye to Trios and started working a Europa and AVEDA salon in Old Town Ft Collins. There, I received more advanced education and took many more classes at the Aveda Institute in Denver. After I had my second baby in 2011, I decided to go out on my own. I worked at a small salon for six months and decided it was time to go out on my own! My husband Ryan Auker and I decided it was time to open up our own salon. In 2012, Mon Petit Salon et Spa was born! We are a KEVIN.MURPHY and Aveda salon and we are always trying to better ourselves as a stylist! We take in-salon classes every quarter. In 2019, I took on a protégés Marissa Robinson. She is a long-time friend who loves hair and I’m excited to share my knowledge of doing hair with her!

I got married in 2008 to my high school sweetheart Ryan Auker. In 2009, we had our first daughter Elli and son Logan in 2011, my Daughter Sofi in 2013. We are currently expecting our 4th baby. Our son Rowan is due in September. We couldn’t be more excited.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think there is always struggles. The road to success isn’t always easy. Leaving salons was always the hardest part for me. My best advice would be to never give up and keep trying for your dream! Don’t let the bumps stop you from moving forward!

Please tell us about Mon Petit Salon.
With my mom owning a salon in our home it was always a dream of mine to have a salon as well. We wanted to create a space that guest immediately feel at home and comfortable.  Mon Petit is a very cozy boutique salon. Which is the what I feel that guest these days are looking for more of a small intimate setting as opposed to a larger salon setting. As for myself… I LOVE to cut hair! I also LOVE making my clients feel beautiful! I feel like I stand out because I focus on making the client look and feel as beautiful as they are on the inside! I love to make my guest feel at home from the second they walk into the salon.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I got very lucky.. my mentor was placed right in front of me! Her name is a Steph and she was my cutting coach at Trios! She helped guide me to be the amazing stylist I am today! She still cuts my hair.

I think it’s important when finding a mentor that you search for someone who has the same focus as you do! I know Marissa (the gal I’m mentoring) and I share many common goals! And are very like-minded.
