Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Gaul.

Mary, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I moved to Colorado in 1989 after working as a Travel Agent in Kansas. Yes – a travel agent pre-internet! I wanted to move to a bigger city with more options to work in the travel industry. Well, I ended up working for a check collection agency and then a large wastewater treatment firm, an engineering firm and then a law firm. So much for travel! I did get to throw some very large parties in some cool venues around the US and Canada. Along the way I learned a wide variety of skills in the communications, marketing, administrative and operations of both large corporate companies and small locally owned businesses. After growing my position at the law firm for ten years, I realized I had no more room for growth. I was encouraged by some colleagues to start my own business. I wasn’t sure I was cut out to be an entrepreneur, but I have never looked back! In August 2013 I started my first company, The Gift of Time, LLC. a virtual assistant company. I knew I had multiple skills that could help small business owners who couldn’t afford to hire someone full time. It was great! I had clients right away – and quickly reached capacity! That lead to my next problem -how to keep growing? I had created a job for myself with multiple bosses and projects, but not a company.

So, I sought and found some support for entrepreneurs. I joined a Peer Advisory Board and started taking some courses called Pinnacle Success Courses. Having that trusted group of other entrepreneurs to tap into for advice, tools and skills helped me to add my first contractors and take on bigger projects with The Gift of Time. While building that business – the two people who created the Pinnacle Success Courses and were leading my Peer Advisory Group decided that they wanted to expand outside of Denver and to do that, they would need to certify others to train their methods. I jumped right in! In 2015, I became a certified Catalyft Coach with the ability to use the licensed IP products to create my own coaching business, Success Magnified, LLC. I love working with entrepreneurs and have helped over 500 businesses find practical solutions and new ideas for growth and success through leading Peer Advisory Boards, courses and 1:1 coaching.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There is nothing as exhilarating or as exhausting as being an entrepreneur! When it goes well – you are living in and getting to share your gifts and talents with your clients who are able to pay you for your knowledge. You get to see the results they have when working with you. When it doesn’t go well – you take on the wrong clients, the wrong projects and don’t know how to value what you’re offering and undersell yourself. You begin to doubt yourself and think maybe I should go back to the corporate world. Luckily those days come farther apart – but they still happen. Realizing that EVERYONE has those moments of struggle helps you feel not so alone.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a certified business coach and advisor, helping with strategy and focus for service entrepreneurs. I help small business owners create profitable and fulfilling business, built around systems and accountability, so they can have time to enjoy life too! I believe in the power of collaboration and celebration to help business owners impact their bottom line, their families, and their communities. I love the creativity and energy of seeing a thought or idea spark in an entrepreneur’s brain and then guide that idea into an actual product/service that produces revenue while serving the person who is buying it. It is such a cool thing to watch and be a part of. I enjoy the creative process as well – having written two Amazon bestselling books! I enjoy speaking on podcasts and to local groups (or non-local via zoom) about Accountability, Critical Thinking and Systems for Entrepreneurs. I support several charities that work to build a better planet through education and action from teaching women in the 3rd world how to start their own business (www.streetbusiness school), to providing clean drinking water (www.cleanwater.org), and local charities supported through Colorado 1000 – a passthrough non-profit (www.co1000.org). On a personal basis – I volunteer on the Denver Walk to End Alzheimer’s – marketing committee.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The Coaching industry has grown consistently in the last decade – so that business coaches are not just available to the executives of large corporations but to small businesses and solo’s as well. That helps everyone. I believe in that small businesses are the lifeblood of our communities – as we saw during the pandemic in 2020 when so many small businesses had to close either temporarily or permanently. We felt those business closures in our communities. I also believe that we can’t do it all on our own – well we sometimes can if we have enough grit and determination, however it doesn’t need to be so hard. Business owners are overwhelmed by all of the information out there and having a trusted source who knows their business is priceless. Covid 19 did shift the way I work with my clients. I used to do all my coaching, courses and Peer Advisory Boards live – if you could get to my office I would work with you. When the shelter in place happened in March of 2020 – I was able to switch all of my coaching and boards to online video calls with great success. Now I have clients all across the US from New York City to Vancouver Washington.
