Life and Work with Mindi Linscombe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindi Linscombe.

Mindi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was a bride (nearly 15 years ag0), looking for a wedding dress in Colorado and did not have the best experience. With the encouragement of my husband, business studies, and the desire to do things the right way – I decided to open up a bridal boutique that prioritized the person over the sale. That’s where our slogan came into play “where the girl comes before the dress.”

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We have worked very hard to be the successful company we are today. It’s definitely important to realize that anything work having, costs so much. We had to sacrifice so much in order to get where we are today. Many think that it’s mostly money that you have to sacrifice… but it’s so much time and energy too. I have had to HUSTLE to make this place tick. In the beginning, I did everything (cleaning, ordering, shipping, receiving, sales, marketing, merchandising, calling, networking, advertising). There was so much to do. After three years of “startup”, I finally got my first paycheck. It was thrilling to imagine the company that one day I would have – now nearly 20 people! But I still work full time, including weekends, and my focus is just on bigger picture stuff rather than the day today. Now, we have great processes and systems in place. The hustle has not stopped, just reallocated to different parts of the business. I look back and am thankful for the sacrifices because now they don’t seem like a big deal compared to the rewards we have experienced. Remember that the rewards may be very delayed, but they are worth the investment.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Something New Boutique – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am most proud of the life moments we create in our store. Whether it’s a bride, groom, bridesmaid, prom girl, mother of the bride, military ball, pageant – anything you’d need to dress up for – we love helping style you for that special event! We spend so much one on one time with each of our guests, that they feel like they have a new best friend. We set the stage for them to have some pretty great memories and surprises with their friends and family. Not only do they love their time with us, but our process leads them to the dress every single time.

Something New Boutique is where the girl comes before the dress, but not just the girl shopping in our store. We also love to give back to the women that work here, the women in our community, and beyond. We support some amazing causes with the purchases of gowns in our store. When someone purchases from my personal collection of wedding dresses, Brooklyn Grace named after my daughter, then we give much of the profit to The Exodus Road – a human trafficking rescue organization. When someone shops in other parts of our store, we give back to the local Children’s Hospital to help all the kids fighting for their life like my son! We give our staff paid time every year to volunteer at the non-profit of their choice. We love cheering them on too! SNB is truly unique in how they take care of the people from the inside out.

Just a fun update – We are excited to be moving to a bigger store at the end of the year (9000 square feet) – hence why I uploaded a photo of our team at the groundbreaking!

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Yes – As a kid, I loved making a big deal out of everyone! The celebration factor was a big deal to me… I grew up just looking for that next moment to make someone feel special. Then, fast forward to adulthood – one of my sons almost died of cancer and it was the lowest point of my life. However, what I kept thinking about in the hospital was how I wanted more “moments” together. I wanted to see him laugh, learn something for the first time, have excitement, wonder! That’s what I do in my store – I sincerely look at each day as a gift to celebrate each person that walks through our doors and WE have the unique opportunity to orchestrate a life moment for them. The tears, the laughter, the celebration – all of it is so special and we are honored to be invited into that process with our customers.
