Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Heykoop.
Robin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After raising my children and teaching preschool for many years, I wanted to do something different. My husband and I spent time at a local coffee shop just up the street from our home. The owner at that time was wanting to sell his shop. This seemed like the perfect fit for me. I love people and our community. We made the decision to purchase it. Over the past two and 1/2 years, our customer base has grown and I can feel the support from those around us.
Our vision statement talks about connection and making a place for people to have that. It also talks about the importance of stories. From the farmers that grow the beans to our staff, to the customers we serve and even our ever-evolving story.
We have just opened our second shop not too far from the first and we hope to see this same feeling of connection in that community.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Learning how to run a small business was definitely a challenge. At first, I tried to do almost everything myself. With the advice from my husband, I learned to find people to come along-side me with gifts, talents, and skills that were different from mine. Together, we make a great team, all of my staff is amazing and we each bring something different to Atlas.
Any adventure that you take will have bumps. Having the support of my husband and my friends around me are key to getting through the tough times.
Please tell us about Atlas Coffee.
Atlas is a community-focused craft coffee shop in Littleton, Colorado that was created to love and serve our community. We travel around the world with our coffee roaster to create relationships with the producers of the beans and to bring back to our community the finest coffee.
We strive to have excellent customer service, a friendly atmosphere, and a welcoming feeling the minute you walk through the door.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
In this day and age and in our society, we are privileged to have the opportunity to engage in all aspects of life. I am so fortunate to have been able to be a stay at home mom, be a small businesswoman, be a significant part of my grandkids lives and enjoy the beautiful mountains of Colorado.
