Life and Work with Sharae Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharae Smith.

Sharae, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started doing hair when I was young about 12 years old. I used to do my sister’s hair for my mom. I learned by watching other people braid. I use to practice on my sisters. After going to college at Grambling State University and learning “traditional school” wasn’t for me, I went into corporate America it still didn’t fulfill me I went to cosmetology school and haven’t looked back

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My road to get to where I am hasn’t been easy. I had life-changing events happen so I decided to move to Fort Collins Colorado and go to cosmetology school. I started at Regency Beauty School, halfway through my program the school ended up closing. I then had to make a decision if completely school or going a different route. I decided to move back to Denver and go to Aveda Institute Denver. Starting at Aveda, I couldn’t transfer my credit hours so I had to start from square one. After being in the program for two months, my best friend was murdered. It affected me and I took a “break” from school. After six weeks, I went back to school and strived to be the best. Three months from graduation, I had an unexpected baby. Having to take another eight weeks off of school. I went back and completed my schooling two years later. All that I been through gave me the courage to be the best and it’s been up from there.
