Life & Work with Julia VonDreele

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia VonDreele.

Hi Julia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
It all started when I was a kid going to summer camp; my parents would send me a disposable camera. Eventually, my parents would send me more than one because I enjoyed taking photos. I would capture the beauty in the earth, the people I was with, and their emotions. Being born deaf, I hear with my eyes, and I see my surroundings to help me “hear” what’s going on around me. I wear cochlear implants which help me hear and speak with people.

When I went to the University of Colorado Boulder I knew I wanted to study photography. After graduating, I interned with a couple of companies in the Denver area to learn more as I am a hands-on learner! I would practice with friends and family to eventually grow to shoot full-time professionally with a company which was a huge accomplishment of mine!

Today, I’m growing my photography business to capture weddings, engagements, families, portraits, and events!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road, as I mentioned, I’m deaf and wear cochlear implants. I grew up in a hearing family and learned American Sign Language in high school to try to fit in with the deaf community. I often feel that I’m in a triangle of the hearing world, the deaf world, and the technology world (with cochlear implants). The three don’t collide together well in today’s world so I’m constantly at battle making them mingle.

Today, when I’m out shooting, I will miss what people are saying and it can be frustrating not only for the client but for me as well. I overcome this by repeating back what clients say so that I know we’re on the same page about their needs and wants. However, because of my deafness, I know that I’m a better artist since my creative eye is enhanced.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a photographer in Colorado, mostly focusing on weddings, engagements, families, and portraits. Occasionally, I’ll do events like birthday parties and fundraisers. I’m most proud of how my work has brought clients to tears and their special moments immortalized for them. I’m also proud of how far I’ve come in just a few years with my skills and knowledge in the photography industry.

What sets me apart from others is how I interact with clients making them comfortable and able to make them laugh while I capture their essence and emotions in a natural, creative and unique way. My style is candid, innovative, and personal with my clients adding a tinge of nostalgia in all of their photos.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Having my clients feel the most comfortable around me as if they have known me for years when they have just met me ten minutes ago is one of my successful characteristics. It makes it so that my photos feel natural and that everyone is having a great time.
